John, I went to school with your dad. Back in the 60s I had an aunt and a cousin that had valves replaced. One was under the care of Dr. Michael Debakey, the other had Dr. Denton Cooley, I am talking about the very early years of cardiovascular research. My aunt and cousin both went on to live long successful lives. So much has changed in the last fifty plus years in the field of cardiovascular research. I don't know if you will live as long as B.A. Watson, but you have a very good chance. Tell your dad I said "Hi", like the Watson family members that, I have met, he is a good man. Hi John:
I had AVR surgery on Nov 17 due to severe aortic stenosis, bicuspid valve. I met with Dr. Ryan and he discussed the options for a replacement valve. He was very kind and patiently answered all of our questions. I chose a bovine valve but the Ross procedure was my back up plan if the valve opening was small. It turns out that Dr. Ryan and Dr. Brinkman performed the surgery. They are top notch surgeons and I can't say enough good things about the nursing care I received. I'm recovering very well thanks to the care I received at the Heart Hospital of Baylor at Plano!

John, Fyi... I emailed Dr. Ryan on your behalf to find out if he is still doing Ross Procedures. Luckily, he quickly responded to me. Dr. Ryan wrote, "I am still doing the Ross Procedure Adam. I do about 10 a year on patients with AS and continue to be pleased with the results. We still do supported Ross for young patients with bicuspid valves whose valves can’t be repaired. It remains a very good procedure." I hope that helps John!
