Hi Jim,
It is great to read your story as it shows progress on the other side. I am a 52 yr old swimmer with mitral regurgitation. The mitral valve leak caused atrial swelling which brought on AFIB. Now I am headed in for both a valve repair and a MAZE. Did you at any time visit MA General? I have both a cardiologist and surgeon there at the moment, but was curious what precipitated the choice of Adams over anyone here in Boston.
Thanks
Tim

Jim Jones Hey Tim:
Good afternoon to you. I did consider MGH 6 years ago after a bout of endocarditis and communicated with a MGH cardiologist and surgeon. I also talked to other cardiologists and surgeons at that time and ended up at the Brigham with Dr. O'Gara, a cardiologist. We followed the mitral valve for 5 years and in 2013 I elected surgery. I wanted a repair and the valve disease (Barlow's) presented a very complex repair scenario. I wanted a repair v. replacement if possible. I was referred to Dr. Adams at Mt. Sinai. He is one of the very top MV repair surgeons in the country and does the most MV repair volume east of the Mississippi. He also was at the Brigham for about 20 years. The complexity of repair led me to NYC because in 2013 Boston did not have a comparable MV repair option for me. Mt. Sinai is a valve reference center. For me, that mattered as their expertise aligned with my valve disease complexity. I hope this helps. My best to you Tim as you head towards surgery.

Jim---Wow -- an entire year---what amazing progress for such an old guy as yourself!! I could NOT be happier to see that you have continued to exhibit a truly "text book case" post surgery recovery!!! However, you deserve all the credit for following the advice of the remarkable doctors and focusing on such a dedicated exercise regimen ---who else would go for a 45 min. run after walking 6-8 miles on a typical vacation day???
You have been an inspiration to many on the Heart Journal, but we were very lucky to have the support of the many family, friends, and Heart Journal cohorts throughout this journey.
To continued great health, to many more memory building experiences ...together ...and, of course, to countless 5k trophies and medals! Cheers! Much love, moi xo

Jim,
So glad to hear you are doing so well and shaved time off your race. Time marches on and it's so hard to believe that both of us were getting our hearts repaired 1 year ago. Do you remember when we were both Adam's "featured patient"? I am now giving advice to a 30 something guy who is planning to have aneurysm and BAV surgery in Dec. My mom just found out 3 of her valves are bad, so the Dr. is going to do the TAVR on the aortic valve sometime in Dec. It will be interesting to see how she does at her age. All the best to you and your family.

Sounds like you are doing great. Wow! Running two 5K races! I received a Fit Bit for Christmas so I've been using mine everyday but will never get near to what you are doing in steps. I am not a runner, but I work out a lot with my trainer and swim(the Fitbit doesn't work with water!) It sure is hard to believe that you, Lynn, etc all had surgeries a little after me! I also remember Aubrey because he had surgery 1 month before me so I followed him and others before me. I am doing great! I still think every day how lucky I am to be alive and to be on the other side of surgery. I would agree with all your helpful hints especially cardio rehab. My 1 month anniversary is coming up on Oct 8 Take care!
