Hey Carol. I'm not sure what to think of the A fib thing just yet. Will I be on blood thinners and blood pressure meds the rest of my life? I always wonder how this got started and was it a function of the surgery? Who knows, heart surgery was a big deal and I'm still getting used to it.
Take care. Bob O.

D. Carol Moore Bob, If you have a mechanical heart valve, yes you will be on blood thinner for the rest of your life; otherwise, I'm not sure. Your doctor will have to answer this question. The reason you take blood thinner (for A-Fib) is to reduce the high risk of stroke. I've been in chronic A-Fib since 2001- take meds to control my heart rate. ( The A-Fib is a result of OHS w/two mechanical heart valves, as told to me by my Cardiologist). I still enjoy life to the fullest and pretty much do what I enjoy doing (with limitations which we all have to some extent). I do take blood pressure med as well. You'll be fine just have to adapt to a different lifestyle... always remember to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. This involves a very good healthy lifestyle. It will help you get through the health challenges that you are faced with.
Bob, enjoy life with all the healthy benefits that comes with it.

I am 56 years old and have been told that I need to have aortic valve replacement (and am scheduled for 1/12/15 but I need to decide on a mechanical or pig/cow valve. I do not like the idea of a mechanical valve because of the coumidin issues. Can you share your experience with taking coumidin and learning to live with it?

D. Carol Moore Cheri, I've been on Coumadin for 38 years and it has well been managed by me and the Coumadin Clinic. When I first started taking Coumadin (1976), I had a hemorrhage in my knee. This was resolved by proper dosage adjustment. Other than that I have not had any issues. When you are on Coumadin, you're given a mg dosage and therapeutic range. Your doctor's office will monitor your INR with PT's. I wasn't comfortable waiting a month to get PT checks so I invested in a machine to check my PT in between time. Avenues: 1) You have to be extremely careful w/OTC meds (your pharmacy can help with this), 2) You need to be selected with a very high vitamin K diet (which can thicken the blood), 3) For surgeries, Coumadin will be stopped and other meds will be given. Please google Coumadin and read before making a firm decision
If I had it to do again, I'll choose a mechanical heart valve and take Coumadin.
Learning to live with it: When health issues occur in our lives, we all have to make lifestyle choices/changes; some we like and some we don't. Thank God for the medical devices, meds, etc. Through it all, God has been faithful in my healing.

Pat B. I am 19 days post op and went through the same decision process (mechanical vs tissue). It's great to hear you doing so well with the mechanical for 20 years. I choose the same path and so far doing great - now just working to get the INR levels right. I just turned 60.

D. Carol Moore Hi Elaine: In response to your question, I have two mechanical heart valves (Mitral and Aortic) 20 years + six months. I have been on coumadin (5 mg) tablets since 1976. The dosage varies with my pro-time. My therapeutic range is 2.5 - 3.5. I have done quite well w/coumadin. Of course, there have been times when it has been out of therapeutic range but having a close relationship with my coumadin clinic has really helped. I also have a machine at home where I check my PT in between times to make sure that I am within my range. Going to the clinic once a month does not sit too well with me. This is something that I chose to do... we all need to take control of our health issues and do the best that we can. Not saying that we take over the doctor's responsibilities but there are things that we can do. After all, these bodies belong to us and we are suppose to take care of them. I intend to live a long, healthy and happy life. In order to do this, I have to trust God and do the very best that I can in taking care of this body, especially as I progress in age. Hope this info helps. If you have further questions, hit me back and we'll discuss further. Have a blessed day!

D. Carol Moore My pleasure Cheryl! Don't be fearful for "God has not given us the spirit of fear but of POWER and LOVE. I am aware that this is new to you but you have God and "all of us" here in the community to help you through this. God is good and He is always there for us for "He will never leave nor forsaken us." While you are waiting for surgery continue to meditate on healing scriptures (try listening to a CD of healing scriptures). Try Kenneth (Gloria) Copeland Ministries, Creflo Dollar Ministries and/or Joel Osteen, just to name a few. Blessings to you dear and remember that YOU are not alone in this.

D. Carol Moore My pleasure, Karen and thank you so much for those kind words. My mission is to let others know that, even though there are storms/challenges that we endure there is HOPE. We've got to 'cast all cares on Him; for HE CARES for us.' 1 Peter 5:7. I realize that at times it's not easy (been there and done that). It's a process - on a journey - to be better and do better.
