Hey Carol. I'm not sure what to think of the A fib thing just yet. Will I be on blood thinners and blood pressure meds the rest of my life? I always wonder how this got started and was it a function of the surgery? Who knows, heart surgery was... Read more.
Bob, If you have a mechanical heart valve, yes you will be on blood thinner for the rest of your life; otherwise, I'm not sure. Your doctor will have to answer this question. The reason you take blood thinner (for A-Fib) is to reduce the high risk of stroke. I've... Read more.

I am 56 years old and have been told that I need to have aortic valve replacement (and am scheduled for 1/12/15 but I need to decide on a mechanical or pig/cow valve. I do not like the idea of a mechanical valve because of the coumidin issues. Can you... Read more.
Cheri, I've been on Coumadin for 38 years and it has well been managed by me and the Coumadin Clinic. When I first started taking Coumadin (1976), I had a hemorrhage in my knee. This was resolved by proper dosage adjustment. Other than that I have not had any issues.... Read more.
I am 19 days post op and went through the same decision process (mechanical vs tissue). It's great to hear you doing so well with the mechanical for 20 years. I choose the same path and so far doing great - now just working to get the INR levels right.... Read more.
Pat: Congrats on 19 days post op! In time your INR level will be right. I call it a body adjustment time for new med. Take care and I am sure that you'll continue to do well.
