Hi. I found your site looking for information to help my dad. On aug 27 he had an AVR. He is 84 and He also has stage 4 kidney disease. Surgery went well. Initial recovery good but he is really struggling to recover. He is still retaining lots of fluids. Has afib. Is anemic. He had a transfusion last week to try and get the iron up. Its so hard because he is six weeks in and never feels better. My mom now thinks he has congestive heart disease. Any thoughts suggestions encouragement is appreciated.

Elaine Foster Hello Vicky, Just read your post and will share my experience with my father. He had OHS bypass surgery at age 79, He also was on kidney dialysis. It was a very hard road. He was in hospital almost 2 months. After Dr ordered barium swallow test to check his throat, (bad idea because of limited fluid intake, and having just had OHS ) anyway the barium cemented in his stomach, and he needed emergency surgery to clean that out. So, 2 surgeries in 10 days put a real strain on his body. Then some other bad decisions just really strained him, and being on kidney dialysis 3 times a week. Well, that the bad news, but the good news is he did come home and a couple of months later he was back on his tractor (he was a farmer) and went on to make hay at 81. So, hang in there with your Dad, and don't hesitate to question the Drs. You have to be his advocate.
