About Me (In My Own Words)
I am a 66 year old woman in California diagnosed with MVP as a child. I had differing diagnoses through the years but finally symptomatic in 2004, hospitalized and diagnosed with CHF. Surgery to repair valve was suggested but not required, started various meds and did fine until a 5 day hospital stay in March 2010 for atrial fib and moderate MV regurgitation. Advised to have surgery immediately and not leave hospital. However, I needed a dental clearance and time to do my own research and obtain 2nd opinion so I would not consider that option as my condition was not an emergency. I had a cardioversion while hospitalized which resulted in normal rhythm and continue on several meds and am feeling great. Second opinion was same diagnosis but showed a much improved ejection fraction number with comment surgery should be done "within months, don't wait years". One surgeon does front incision, other side. Also require a Maze procedure. My dilemma - go for front incision with my local surgeon or minimally invasive at Cedars Sinai. Waiting to read Adam's book for more information. I like what each surgeon had to say but am concerned that they make this operation sound as easy as a tooth extraction. I understand that they do this every day, but I don't. I am finding it so difficult to make a decision and am depressed about feeling so well and knowing I will NOT be feeling as well for weeks or months after. I would appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks.
