I been informed by my surgeon the only two valves he currently uses for aortic replacement is the Avalus as part of a trail or the Trifecta valves. I am trying to get up to speed on these quickly since I am currently scheduled for surgery on 5/1/19. Any experience or data you can share would be very helpful.

Steve Farthing My own view is that if the surgery is not an emergency and the surgeon is OK with waiting 3, 6, or 12 months, then it is reasonable to delay surgery until your questions are answered - especially with regard to the type of valve to implant and the selection of the surgeon and hospital.

Susan Lynn I completely agree with Steve. I'd also consider looking into whether a mini- thoracotomy is an option for you before you undergo a second sternotomy. There are so many advances in valves and procedures to place them, it's worth doing a little homework before you proceed. I spoke to several surgeons before I felt educated enough to make a final decision. Wishing you all the best!
Thomas Barton I have decided on the Trifecta valve, thanks to all for your inputs

Catie B Thomas, I have not had a second sternotomy, but it was necessary for me to choose a tissue valve when I had my aortic surgery at age 57. So, I discussed second surgeries with two surgeons. I was advised that these procedures have become safer and safer and that at a hospital where many of these surgeries are performed with excellent outcomes, the risks for a second surgery are very close to that of a first operation. Hopefully, someone will be able to chime in to more directly address any issues re: 2nd sternotomies.

Gregory Ballard I had OHS #5 in December. If you have a good doctor who is confident in re-do OHS you will be fine. Maybe better than some as you know what to expect. I had best experience yet on #5. Best of luck!

I have been doing a lot of homework on valve types. I have not made a decision yet but I seeking information on the Edwards Inspiris Resilia prosthetic aortic valve. The claims of lower potential calcium build up over time is interesting development. If anyone has additional information on this tissue valve type I would love to hear.

I had Quad by-pass surgery about 12 years ago on my left side. I am doing fine and the by-pass is functioning well. However over time my aortic valve started to leak and finally reached the point of needing replacement. am 60 years old, in good physical condition and show no symptoms from the aortic regurgitation. I am struggling with the decision on which type of valve to use, a tissue bio-mechanical or a On-X mechanical valve. My surgeon is recommending the On-X valve while my cardiologist is pushing going with the tissue valve. The cardiologist's concern is potential issues with blood thinners long term (Coumadin). The surgeon believes that i would only require minimal doses and that a Plavix/aspirin option is forth coming. I read much on the On-X valve and feel it is a quality product. My largest hang-up is the long term effect of the blood thinners over time coupled with a change in my lifestyle. I am slightly leaning towards a bio-mechanical valve, knowing that i will have need a TVAR procedure in my 70's. My surgery scheduled for 4/30/19. I would appreciate any opinions or experience you wish to share. Tom Barton (tlb1@ti.com)

Marie Myers I made that difficult decision 2 yrs ago, when I was 63 . After struggling with the decision for months, I went with the bovine tissue valve. It was mostly a decision against Coumadin. I also hope to have TAVR when this valve wears out...It was the most difficult decision I ever made. Wishing you all the best in your journey!

Steven Liebowitz Thomas, I’m six months out from OHS to replace my aortic valve. I too spent a lot of time researching options, and ultimately went with my surgeon’s recommendation of the bovine tissue valve. I’m 63 and didn’t want to deal with blood thinners and their side affects. Wishing you a successful surgery and a speedy recovery! 👍
