Today marks 1 year since my aortic valve and root replacement. Time seems to be flying by. I'm most thankful for my successful surgery and sometimes forget I even had it. It's truly amazing how advanced OHS has become. For those getting ready to have surgery, I want you to know my prayers are with each and everyone of you. I know without the Lord though it might have been different for me but He truly gave me the peace and strength needed to venture through. To God be the Glory!

Amy Steele Congrats, Ruth! I'm glad that you're doing so well. I hope to be feeling much better in a year from now and posting something similar to your post. As I prepare for my surgery on Monday, I have been impressed with the staff at TMC and I like my local Pima Heart surgeon very much... Glad to hear you had a very good experience here in Tucson. So many people travel, which we considered, but decided that for us a local surgery was the best option right now.

Hello Heart Family,
This is Christine, Ruthie's daughter. My best friend went into surgery at about 0930 this morning. I spoke with the CT surgeon beforehand and he still wasn't sure if he was going to replace her aortic root which mad me nervous. I didn't want her to end up back in the OR in a year. We decided it was in God's hands. Well, about 2 hours into surgery the OR nurse came out and told me he was replacing both. This was a huge relief but also made me even more anxious because of the higher risk for a post on stroke. It is now 1830 and she is in ICU (has been for 4 hours). Surgery went alot faster than I thought it would. She is still intubated which I know she is not happy about. I spoke with every doctor and every nurse about her anxiety about the tube. Her nurse is working on getting it out. She is just too drowsy still. She looks comfortable, I got a couple smiles out of her which made me relax. So far so good and I can breathe a little easier. I can't thank you all enough; her heart brothers and sisters for your support and encouragement you have given her and ME!! She tells me stories all the time about you kids and how well you have done. I'm an ICU registered nurse and see this kind of stuff all the time, but man does it feel like a ton of bricks when it's your most favorite person. This site has educated her to no end and I am so proud of her for it. Thats the biggest advice for those of you having surgery soon, educate yourselves!!! Thank you for all of the prayers as well. My mom and I were at such peace this morning. Praise God. Lastly, to John Schutte, Lisa Heinen, Gram Peku, and Susan Kotansky you all are in my prayers as well as my mom's. I pray that God guides your surgical teams, gives you peace, and that you heal beautifully. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart to my mom's new and improved heart!

Ruth Valenzuela Painting her toes last night and updating her heart family were my tasks given by her! She's an amazing girl and I'm lucky to have her!! She's resting now with the darn endotracheal tube still in but she is calm and collected! She doesn't do too well with anesthesia so her tube has to stay in a few more hours. She's off all bp meds and hasn't even needed heart rate meds. She has her pacer pads in place and hasn't needed those bad boys either. She still had quite the journey go but God has her in his hands!

Well the time has come for me to depart my home and head to Tucson, AZ. It's about an hour and half drive. My surgery takes place Tuesday unless something changes (got a voicemail and it was my surgeon's office saying there is a change to my scheduled surgery), I couldn't get back with them since no one was there this weekend. I don't know if she means changed time-wise or a different day. Then she said the doctor needed for me to have a carotid test??? I know that mean the arteries in my neck. I had a ct scan Friday so I'm wondering if there was a finding that prompts him to want this test. I will leave it all in the Lord's hands. I covet all your prayers and from the bottom of my "heart" I thank God for each and everyone of you. Even though I didn't pipe in on some of your post, I have been watching and praying. Your shared stories and your support have given me strength to face the inevitable. Will keep you all posted and would hope that my experience will vastly help whoever follows. Blessing to all... especially to Adam Pick who was Picked by God to help so many people.....

Just getting home from the Tucson Area. I had a ct scan in one radiology medical facility. Went to breakfast, and then had to go the hospital where I'm actually having the surgery. I had more tests there in addition to blood drawn (I swear they are blood suckers). I feel like a pin cushion. After an xray, I received a tour of the Intensive Care Unit where I'm told I'll be spending a day or two at. I talked to a wonderful nurse there and she couldn't tell me enough on how I have one of the best surgeons. In fact other nurses in different areas of where I've been sent have told me the same about him. He is well loved for sure and that makes me happy. I asked the nurse in ICU would she let him operate her and she said indeed she would although she doesn't want to be in that condition of needing an operation. Can't say I blame her. I'm really having some emotional issues now and think I just need to have a good cry. I'm super tired and have to admit I'm really apprehensive, especially of seeing that darn breathing tube when I wake. Lord, please help me not walk in fear I pray. Praying for all of you.

Well, I had my cardiac cath yesterday and it revealed no blockage which I'm totally grateful for. But now my cardiologist feels I need to have surgery for my aortic valve sooner than later. He said my valve has gotten really tight and he told me I have an aortic root measuring 4.7. That was a first time hearing anything about a "root". I've had quite a few echos and was never told anything about that. Anyone that can tell me about the "root" issue, I'd really appreciate it... P.S. I think I'm still in denial about it all... Tammy Pilcher Ruth, I'm so glad you don't have any blockages. I was so grateful too when I found out my arteries were clear. My surgeon had to do an aortic root enlargement with a Dacron patch when he replaced my valve. It is so amazing what they can do and how our bodies can recover so well. You are going to do great too! Dan D. I scheduled surgery for my aortic root replacement, got a cath that no blockages so I was glad. Then, as part of pre-surgical tests, was told to have an MRI. (No one had mentioned anything about my aortic root.) Then I was told that part of the reason for the MRI was to check my aortic root to see if that needed to be replaced. I was shocked. As it turned out, my maximal measurement was 4.2 cm; I was told that they usually replace it if it's 5.0 - so I had valve replacement but not aortic root. But I'm a bit confused about the future. Get some opinions about it.

Hi Ruth. I get that same thing from time to time and my Cardiologist doesn't seem to think it's from my valve. I don't know if I believe that or not but since I go for periods of time without that happening, then perhaps he's right. If it's the valve then why wouldn't this happen more often? I'm still trying to figure out what I believe. My blood pressure runs pretty low so my doctor feels that even a slight decrease could cause that. Again, what to believe? I don't know. Last Monday I had an episode that I wasn't able to shake off as quickly as usual and I got checked out. Same symptoms you described, same as I have gotten in the past. It turned out that it was dehydration and an electrolyte imbalance from the hot weather we're having and of course, my negligence in drinking enough water. I've been keeping hydrated since, reduced my caffeine intake and haven't had a problem since. But just to be sure, if I were you, I would at least give your doctor a call and run it by someone there. These symptoms could be from so many different things, it might bring you peace of mind to at least know if it's your heart or not. Good luck to you. Feel better. I'll email again soon.

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Ruth. I am one year out of surgery now and remember was asymptomatic right up to near when the date was set for surgery with the exception of having periods on and off where I felt a heaviness in my chest(not pain)and kind of light like I would pass out. I made it a point to contact my cardiologist as these changes began and they started looking closer into this as they were in fact the beginning symptoms of my valve changes. So like Tammy and Karen have written I agree that you have peace of mind by contacting someone to let them be aware of what is going on and make a decision in what to do(if anything) at this point. I hope you get an answer to do just that as you will feel better for informing your health care people.

Ruth Valenzuela Thank you Tammy and Karen! I have called my cardiologist and of course he was with a patient and his assistant will get back with me... It's so nice to get information from people that know what this is all about. I want to be told it's not the heart but something tells me it is. I also have a swollen left ankle... and it's getting difficult to lay in bed at times. I feel like my breathing is just a little labored. I don't have time for all this... ha ha Again, thank you so much for answering.... Blessings to you!
Tammy Pilcher You're very welcome, Ruth! Please let us know what you find out. God bless you!

Ruth Valenzuela Well, I saw my cardiologist yesterday and he thinks I might have had a heart attack. He looked at an echo I had done while I was hospitalized in Mar/Apr and told me my valve has gotten a tad worse. I was not hospitalized due to my heart but for something else and that's the reason he never saw the results of my echo until yesterday. He wanted me to go back and have an angiogram this Friday but I told him I couldn't, so scheduled for next Friday. He said he was going to go in through both sides of my groin (thought it was only one side) but he said both. He said if he finds blockage and can put a stent in, he will but that if I need surgery, I'll have surgery for the blockage and since the surgeon will be in there anyway, the valve will be taken care of too. I'm praying that I won't need surgery! Prayers are needed and I absolutely covet them. Love to all and especially those going through surgery now or soon. I am just a tad bit nervous.... guess that's the norm....

I am doing well with my heart for now but I'm going through new health issues. I've had a horrible rash going on six months now which causes intense itching and it's all over my body. I've been seen by different dermatologists and now it's thought I have cancer and I'll be going through every test known to mankind to find it. My dermatologist told me in all his 35 years of practicing, I'm his 7th patient that has this rare rash called reactive perforating collagenosis. I've been keeping my eye on all your stories and have been faithful to keep you in prayers especially those on surgery day! Keep on keeping on! I would appreciate all your prayers. I'm thankful that my heart issue can wait until January of next year. God is good all the time!

Virginia (Ginger) French Ruth, You are being prayed for. It is amazing the trials God allows in our lives. I never thought I would go through five major surgeries in three years, with cancer in the middle and the heart valve as the last (so far at least!) I think He trusts me too much, but I do lean on Him quite a bit when my own strength is lacking.
Please keep us up to date so we can be praying for your needs.
You have a beautiful name, and you have every right to be tired. Right now you need most to take care of and pamper YOU! Please give yourself a break as much as possible. Reducing stress helps one's outlook and also one's health!
Hugs and prayers,
Ginger

Had my semi-annual echo and all has remained the same. My cardiologist was pleased with the results and felt I can wait another year before I have another echo. I'm still in the moderate stage and it's the first time the valve didn't get worse. I'm more pleased than him! I'm praying for all those that are preparing for surgery. May God's hand rest on you and pull you through... He is more than able!
Tammy Pilcher That's wonderful, Ruth! Amen, our awesome God is more than able!

Vancouver Heart Procedure Set for International Trial.
A heart procedure pioneered at Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital could allow people to avoid open-heart surgery and massively cut down on recovery times.
Called the Vancouver 3M Clinical Pathway, the procedure involves inserting a new valve into people’s hearts by way of a catheter.
According to Dr. Alexander Wood, a standard aortic valve replacement keeps a patient in the hospital for up to two weeks, and away from work for up to three months.
But the 3M Clinical Pathway, which is about to be tested in a North America-wide study of 1200 patients, takes less than an hour and has a full recovery time of under a week.
The first test took place in Vancouver today on Theresa Stickley, a sister at a Squamish monastery. The 83-year-old rejected open heart surgery, but was convinced to try the new procedure.
Awake the entire time – and watched by dozens of clinicians on livestream – Stickley was grateful for the new lease on life.
“I think I have a few years to help the sisters, help the monastery. Do some work, do some dishes,” she said.
“It’s really wonderful. It’s going to help others, and that’s the thing.

Ruth, I totally understand the worry about the TEE. I would not be able to do it if I'm awake. I was told by my doctor that they do give something so you will sleep through it. I used to work at a hospital in the Cardiologist Dept where they did all these tests and I remember they didn't put the patient out and I could never understand it because the patients had such a hard time. But that was 12 years ago and I was assured that it is not done that way anymore, they use conscious sedation. I'm glad to hear that so many people can confirm that from their experience because sometimes I don't believe what the doctors say.. :)

Well I had my yearly echo this past week and my cardiologist said he needs to repeat one in 6 months. He said my valve has pretty much stayed at 1.0 but that my mean gradient went to a 28 (don't understand much about gradients but I will find out)! I do know my first echo showed it was a 15, the second one was a 19 and now it's a 28. I believe he said they start to worry when it gets to 50. I'm reading all the journals and know who is facing surgery soon and my prayers are with you all. I thank God for this community of people.
I would encourage you to ensure you have resolution on your diagnosis. I did not have the classic symptons of "loss of breath", but after completing all the tests up to the TEE I was defined with moderate to severe mitral valve regurgitation. This resulted in further appointments with surgeons and ultimately in mitral valve repair surgery. Ensure you get resolution on your physical condition.

I have a question, "Did anyone experience being awakened at night with coughing spells?" I am still in the wait and see mode so haven't been operated on. I know some of the symptoms are breathlessness, fatigue, dizziness, etc. I'm scheduled for an echo on 23 May so I'll have some answers then, but I was just wondering if anyone experienced coughing bouts prior to their surgery. Thank you!
