Hi all, I am one week post op. on my AVR. Very sensitive in the chest area. I am getting better and can get into and out of bed without help.
I hope to see a marked improvement by the end of the second week. Don't cough, don't laugh and by all means, don't sneeze!

Hi all, I am scheduled for AVR on Feb. 25th. My emotions are all over the place. My cardiologist said technically I could wait a few more months but didn't recommend it. My numbers are 3.75 but I do have some breathing issues.
I do hope I am doing the right thing by having it done now and not waiting. I am going with the tissue valve because I am prone to being a big klutz and always hurting my self. I wish I could turn my brain off when I start getting depressed about it.
Everything I have read and heard is I will feel like a new man and could run a marathon if I wanted to. I hope that's right. Anybody with any post op experience, please let me know.
Thanks all.

Wanda Mroz Welcome. It is always better to do these things sooner than later. Why risk damage to the heart? I had mitral valve repair... but can answer questions as far as OHS. Many wonderful people on this site that have gone through it and can answer questions for you. Breathe... normal to get worried, depressed, stressed and anxious! All normal. Hang in there... best of luck!

Ruth Valenzuela I am 64 years old and had my aortic valve and root replaced on 29 Sep 15. I had a few bouts with afib afterwards but the meds brought it back to normal. I didn't have much pain afterwards but did feel overwhelming tiredness and had to depend on my daughter for help. I can really say my open heart surgery was not as bad as I had thought it would be! I give the greatest praise to the Lord who saw me through and provided one of the best surgeons around. I'm so thankful!!! It's normal to have your emotions all over the place. You wouldn't be human if you didn't feel those emotions but you will do good. The success rate is really high. I'll be praying for you!!!

Ruth Valenzuela P.S. I also got a porcine tissue valve and I believe you are doing the right thing by having it done now. I saw my surgeon on a Thursday afternoon and he scheduled me for the following Tuesday morning. I was sort of shocked when he told me that soon but it was the best thing I did. I asked him, "Why so soon." He answered: "Why do want to let the coat fall from the hanger!" In other words, why did I want to wait and maybe something worse happen.

Hi all, looks like AVR in mid Feb. I am leaning towards a mechanical On-x valve. However, I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next year. I understand if they have to remove a polyp that could be bad on Coumadin. Anybody had a colonoscopy with a mechanical valve?

I work with an internist physician and just today we were talking about coumadin and she mentioned that she had a patient who was on coumadin who had to get off of it temporarily because of the colonoscopy. She said he had been off of the coumadin and then couldn't have the colonoscopy for some other health reason (flu or something like that) and then they had to readjust his coumadin levels and he had to start the process over again to get the colonoscopy. I am sure your cardiologist/surgeon would have information for you.

I did have 3 different procedures in a doctor's office. For one, no change to my warfarin was required. For the other, I bridged with Lovanox injections and it was no big deal. My hospital has a coagulation clinic. The pharmacists there are great. After my blood draw, they call and give me a dosage. They are the go between when I need a procedure. They contact the respective offices and figure out what to do with the warfarin.

Sophia Ridley I got really worried about this test but it was fine. They 'll give you something to calm you, I was so chilled out that I watched the screen (!) and did forget to breath normally. Do breath well, I ended up with a lung function where they had to clip my ear - ouch!

Also, having two, 20-year old nurses in the room to shave my around my private parts was a real trip. I had to close my eyes. I just couldn't watch that. :)
It is mostly just waiting around to go in, a short procedure, and waiting around to make sure the places they opened up are stable before you go.
