Hello, I had an Aortic valve replacement 2 may 2013, I was an Edwards Pericardial Tissue Heart Valve 330TFX.. I have had regular follow up visits with my Cardiologist and surgeon. Yesterday 25 May I went for a followup and had an echogram an cardiogram. It was found that the valve was severely calcified. After less than two years. No one noticed last year but now the Dr. says in one year or less I will need a replacement. I am not on dialysis. When I had the valve replaced the doctors said my arteries were in good shape. HOW can I get to a place in less than two years when the valve should have lasted 15-10 years. Was the valve bad. Did an MRI damage it. I am retaining too much calcium? I am worried and dissapointed because I think I should have been monitored more closely and the symptoms should have been detected last year. Please give me your advice, opinions.
thank you

Denise Campbell I think my doc said that the tissue valves can get bad just like your original. Stenosis or calcified. I have a mechanical valve. Coumadin stinks forever, but I don't want to do this agin. Good luck. Keep us posted

Ruth Valenzuela I feel so bad for you but this is not the first time hearing that someone's valve calcified in such a short time. I wish I had the answers to your questions but I totally understand your disappointment and worrying. I had the porcine tissue valve and your post makes me wonder what is in the future for me. If you ever get your questions answered, please let us know what your medical team says. Blessings to you!

Enrique K Sorry to hear that Richard. Usually the type of valve I have (porcine) lasts 10-15 years but no one really knows. My cardiologist has patients going on with 22 years on a pig valve.
Denise and Ruth, First off, do not think that any valve replacement is permanent. Mechanicals can and have had to be replaced as well. Sometimes the valves fail. Also repairs fail. It also depends what surgeon you pick. Everyone says they are super stars do your dudiligence and research the top. Watch your salt intake and dietary restrictions and you will be ahead of the game! Good luck to everyone!

Emily Rowley Maybe your next option is to think about a mechanical valve? Enrique is right sometimes valves fail and so do repairs, I was told my repair would last 30 years however I got 5 years out of it. Good luck which ever way you decide :)

To answer some of your questions, yes I have symptoms. Shortness of breath. Yes I have had an appointment with the surgeon who installed the Aortic porcine valve 2 yrs ago and he said the echocardiograms are not that accurate and vary and continued on saying that he thought there was nothing seriously wrong. So I let my Cardiologist know and he is still concerned and is ordering a Transesophageal Echocardiogram this Friday. I will let you all know what happens. Meanwhile I will try, Try to limit my SALT intake. I am an addict.
5 years Emily? So now what?
