I want to thank all of you for taking the time to share empathy with me.
I'm still undecided about whether to accept my 2nd OHS in 12 months for aortic valve replacement or not and this past month has been devastating for me emotionally.
Does anyone lives with heart failure? What is it like? Are the symptoms really debilitating? If you don't have diabetes or any other condition, will that make the symptoms easier to live with??

Rita Savelis I think this is a question to ask your doctors as well. I understand your emotions and I remember asking doctors to tell me, honestly, what life would be like without surgery, something they don't like to do. But it helped me to know all sides. That said, I have only had heart surgery one time (although for 2 valves) 8 years ago. I empathise with you and know how emotional and reticent I would feel if I had to do it again. I would want lots of information. I do think that heart failure means that you will be progressively more short of breath and doing even simple things in the house will make you more and more tired. So going through an operation could allow you to have more strength and more energy and to be able to do more everyday things without exhaustion. Take care.

Hey lovely people I need your help and life experience tips :)
In May 2022 I had ascending aorta surgery and it was a complete hell. I've been 20 days at the hospital (high temperature, fluids in the lungs as well in the heart, two additional procedures to extract it), then 7 days home and another 10 days at the hospital. Needless to say that I was both physically and psychologically broken.
Recovery was so slow that I doubted I will ever recover. Immediately on the first check up doctor noticed "trivial" aortic regurgitation. But they said there's nothing to worry about. And 20 days ago, exactly on my 1 year anniversary they said I have severe aortic regurgitation and small mitral regurgitation but surgery is required for aortic regurgitation in 90 days, which is in August. But I don't have the name of the surgeon or the exact date and time of surgery.
I live on the 4th floor and can easily go up the stairs every day. My only symptom is occasional feeling of lightheadedness. My blood pressure is around 110/53.
Since I'm from Bosnia I don't have much options - Belgrade is the only available heart centre.
Nobody talked to me and they won't because that's how they do it. And if you don't have connections there's no way you can reach any of the surgeons to talk with them. That's reality of life in this part of the world.
Ever since they told me that I will have to go through this torture again I am paralyzed. From the moment I wake up until the moment I fall asleep I'm just thinking about what decision to make and reliving the trauma of my past surgery.
I have Marfan syndrome and I feel like my life is rapidly collapsing in the past 4 years. I will very likely have another eye surgery (my 5th for now) in the near future and potentially being on Warfarin will make it more risky and complicated.
What to do?? To reject the surgery and try to live the remaining 1-2 year or to get hooked on mechanical valve and Warfarin for life. Ticking and Warfarin are terrifying to me. My quality of life has already been on decline and with mechanical valve and warfarin I think I would actually get diagnosed with clinical depression.
So many questions on my mind... I can't even remember them.
What is like to go to the dentist while on Warfarin? What if I for some reason only eat once on some day, will that disrupt my INR? Can you listen to music with the ticking? Can you eat cheese, milk, pork on Warfarin? What about oranges, cappucino? Do you regret having mechanical valve?
Please share your experience.
I'm 31 and completely lost right now. I go through so much emotions from anger, denial to overwhelming sensation of loneliness. I don't know what to do...

Rita Savelis I'm very sorry about what you are going through. In answer to your questions: I go to the dentist with no problem on warfarin, but you do need to let the dentist know that you are on anticoagulants. I eat everything while taking warfarin - INR naturally goes up and down all the time, that can not be avoided. You sometimes have to change your dose of warfarin, but you cannot control your INR. It can be hard to get used to but eventually you do get used to it. I no longer worry very much (it's been 8 years) and I eat whatever I like. I have 2 mechanical valves and do not hear ticking on any regular basis. Sometimes if a room is very very quiet I can hear my heart beat. It certainly is not a problem to listen to music. You can eat cheese, milk, pork, oranges on warfarin and drink cappuccino. I do not regret having mechanical valves. In a perfect world I would not have had heart surgery and it certainly was a hard experience and I did feel depression and I did need to talk about it a lot to try to make sense of it. But then life went on. I am so very very sorry that you have to go through this at such a young age and that you have to deal with the health system that is available to you. This is hard, but then you move forward. Everything you are feeling is so very very normal considering what you are experiencing. Expressing yourself can help. Music can help. Friends can help. This site can help. Talking to your doctors or a therapist can help. Take care.
Tatjana Seizova-Cajic Dear Nik, I too am very sorry you suffer from health problems at a young age. I very much understand your fears of hospitalizations and things we go through post surgery (it’s my day 6 post-op). On the other hand, being young is also your advantage when it comes to recovery. For what it’s worth, I like to think of my own surgery as a gift of modern medicine… would have a shorter life than without. When I worry about various complications I might still have, I recall what one surgeon said, ‘we take away a big disease and give you a smaller one’ (consequences of surgery, side-effect of drugs, whatever). You had one really tough experience, but maybe you will have no complications next time. good luck

Rose Madura Nik, you've come to the right place for support. I'm so sorry you have to go through another surgery so soon. I was much older (59) when I had an aortic valve replacement, ascending aorta and root replacement. I got a tissue valve. If I were your age, I would have gotten the Onyx valve. I've heard it requires less warfarin. Check into it. There are many younger people on this site who lead very active and productive lives while living with warfarin. Try to stay positive. And advocate for yourself. God bless you on this journey.

STEPHEN MORRIS Nik, these are all normal questions and feelings. My surgery was emergency surgery, they were trying to save my life. My family asked if I will be able to do my job and the activities I did. They didn't have an answer. Without the surgery, I was going to die. With the surgery, I could die as well. I understand the blood thinner questions. Many people live with taking it for other reasons besides mechanical valves. Life is wonderful and you have many years ahead.

Sue Lee We are also considering a mechanical valve for a young person such as yourself. I think people on this site can answer your questions re how that is. It’s scary but many live full, active lives on warfarin. The OnX seems to be the current favored valve but the St Jude’s is good too and has a long history

Annette Sterzel Nik I am so sorry for your rough start. I am 71 years old and 4 months ago had a valve replaced with a tissue valve and another valve repaired. Klara Čičić Dear Nik I am so sorry you are going through this. Did you consider Zagreb? Prof. Gasparovic is known to be very good, although I don't know his exact statistics. I went to Germany and paid. Could that be option for you? Is repair possible? We encourage everyone on this site to go and look for second and even third opinion if possible. You are not alone! We are here for the support and know how you feel. Please stay strong!!
