Hi All, I had aortic valve replacement surgery in December. It is now five months from surgery and I am still so tired, it seems every day after working and my walk I have to have a nap. Is this normal so far from surgery? I've never been this tired every day in the past.

Marie Myers What does your primary care doc/ and or cardiologist say? Lots of physical (low blood count, low thyroid) and emotional reasons (cardiac depression ) to be tired. Have you had a full work up, including your emotional health? I know i was still taking an afternoon nap every now and then at 5 months, but overall, I was feeling much improved from the first 2 months. I hope you get some answers, but remember that everyone’s recovery is different, and you just may need a bit more time. Hope you are feeling more energy soon!

Rose Madura Hi Linda. I had a ton of complications with my surgery but felt I turned a corner in 3 months. Marie gives good advice (as usual) as far as getting a workup from the PCP. OHS is a big deal so see your doctor to be sure all is well. God bless you.

Rita Savelis Working and walking is tiring. 5 months is early. There are so many reasons to be tired. Sometimes we think we'll be "better" very quickly after surgery. Our hearts are fixed but our bodies are still healing. I was never tired before heart surgery. But yes I was tired after. For a long time. Take care.

Susan Lynn Linda - I felt healed fairly quickly after surgery, but the fatigue lingered for a very long time. Your exhaustion may also be related to medication side effects - metoprolol, specifically, can cause that tired, sluggish, feeling. I have also heard that full recovery from heart surgery takes about a year - far longer than many of us thought. Take the naps - you'll see improvement with a little more time. Best of luck!
