Does anyone know what the life expectancy is for someone getting a mechanical mitral valve replacement? I am almost 60 years old.

Deena Z Kurt- first qt: are you sure that you are not a candidate for a repair. I had severe calcification on my mitral valve and still had it repaired.

Kurt Drury I asked my surgeon about repair and he talked briefly about it but acted like it wasnt much difference in repair and replace. From what I read alot of surgeons choose replacement because they dont have enough practice at repairing the valve. I sent message to him and asked if repair is possible instead of replacement after I educated myself on the mitral valve. Just waiting for his response.

Susan Lynn Kurt - I think the statistic is that 95% of mitral valves are repaired. Also, the life expectancy for the patient is returned to normal after the repair. I asked that question to my surgeon. My understanding is that a lifetime of blood thinners can take their toll, but I don't have that background.
Interview several surgeons before making a decision. It's worth the time to get the best solution for your specific situation. As others have stated, you will likely be eligible for a repair. Best of luck! ❤

Dave Raynor Kurt, 8 months ago I couldn't have offered any kind of reasonable answer. That is not the case now. I had aortic root and aortic valve replacement 8 months ago. I had three decision on the aortic valve. The first one was to fly back to the Cleveland Clinic and have them save the organic valve. I was told by my lead surgeon that going to the Cleveland Clinic would have been mostly impossible but he offered it as an option but time was an issue. Two was to go with a mechanical valve and three was to go with a synthetic valve which we both opted for. Here were the issues for the choice. The mechanical valve will most likely out live the recipient. However, you will have to be on Warfarin the rest of your life. With the tissue valve you can get off the Warfarin after about 6 months but eventually at least. The tissue valve is quieter and if it fails 15 years down the road...I was told it could be repaired through angiogram type surgery. There is what I know.
