I’m 9 days after my surgery for 2 valve replacements. Everything went well and recovery is slowly but surely happening. But I’ve noticed my taste buds aren’t the same...is that par for the course? One of my favorite teas just doesn’t have a lot of taste to it. Was wondering if anyone else experiencing or experienced this?

Tom Bartolomei My taste buds and appetite were considerably off. I’m 3.5 weeks post surgery and all is back to normal as far as taste buds and appetite goes. I was a coffee drinker and couldn’t touch the stuff until now. Also enjoyed my bacon from time to time, but 2 weeks post surgery and it tasted horrendous to me. Good luck. Tom

David Moore Jarrod - this is Cheryl - A previous heart surgery patient's wife told me that to wake up your taste buds just put a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and hold it under your nose and breath a little. It also helps with nausea if you have any. I haven't had to use it for David yet as he is four weeks out today and I'm a pushy wife and I make him eat - but NO BACON - Tom, what's up with that? You guys are heart patients - gotta cut out that fat (and sodium) from your diet. I have also added frozen fruit smoothies (with spinach - Popeye food) with protein powder from organic sources and those are tasty so David will sip on those to help keep healthy nutrition going in. Just try the alcohol trick and also find foods that do taste good but are somewhat healthy. Gotta keep your strength up as healing really does take it out of you. God bless you - and Tom, you too as well. - Cheryl

Tom Bartolomei I know regarding the bacon but I was a bit frazzled about my taste buds and thought bacon would be a slam dunk, as in taste great. I had one bite and it was vile tasting to me. Outside of that endeavor, I’m on a strict diet for sure. A few odd things remain with taste but for the most part, things have returned to normal. No Bacon! Haha

David Moore Ha, Ha Tom..... I was just teasing you about the bacon. On David's first solid food meal in ICU they brought him BACON and PANCAKES! It was crazy to me. The guys here on the forum had a good time teasing him about the photo I posted of him with that first meal. As one doctor told us - your job right now is to eat and get your strength back (within reason). May God continue to bless you on your journey. - Cheryl
