My husband recently had a mechanical aortic valve replacement and is having trouble sleeping with the sound of the ticking. Does anyone have any advice (best sleep positions? do you get used to it). He wasn't the best sleeper before and now 2 weeks post surgery he wakes around 3/4am to mobilise and can't get back to sleep because of the ticking.....Any advice welcome x

Rita Savelis I have had 2 mechanical valves for 7 years. I used to hold a pillow to my chest to muffle the sound when i was reading on the sofa. Now i rarely notice it. But i understand waking up in the night and having the slightest thing bother you. My husband snores for example. Almost everyone, no matter what their valves, has trouble sleeping for weeks/months after surgery. And one is so aware of one's body. The beating of ones heart . I still recommend a small pillow for the moments when the sound of valves bothers your husband. Take care. It's probably harder to be a caretaker, like you are, than a patient. Things get better but those first few months were hard for me. OHS is an ordeal. Recovery is arduous. And then you find a new normal. But you can't hurry it.
