Bob Fessler Yup. I've heard that. I guess it is due to the level of activity. My surgeon said 80% bovine AVR valves are still good at 20 years. Some fail right away as there are bound to be a few duds. He didn't break it down by age.

Anna Jones I asked the question of a surgeon. He explained that it has to do with the immune system. He said that younger people have strong immune systems that attack the implanted valves. Older people's immune systems are less aggressive so it takes older people longer to destroy their implanted valve.

Kelly Stoll We saw two surgeons. Both encouraged us to consider the mechanical valve for my AVR, in large part due to my age (36). My cardiologist also said the tissue valves are good options but that in younger patients, the expectancy for how long they last is shorter versus having surgery at age 60+.
