I am 10 weeks post op from my 2nd aortic valve replacement surgery and just over the past few days from my chest down my right arm all the way to my fingers and some in my left hand just aches. Best way I can describe it. It hurts and bothers me so bad that I am having trouble sleeping. It seems to be the worst at night. I have taken Tylenol and muscle relaxers and used a heating pad to try and get relief and not much seems to help. Has anyone had this happen especially just starting almost 3 months post op?
My thought is its my nerve endings "healing" from the surgery it just surprises me to just now be feeling this.

Denise Campbell Hi Catrina. I'm 11 weeks post op and I have soreness and pain in my upper arms. Biscep area. My left is worse. I was thinking maybe it's the way they have you positioned on the operating table. I hope it's not nerve damage. And the machine at rehab seems to have made it more sore.

Kenneth Cole I had some pain in different areas after surgery. I'm 210 pounds, think they had a hard time sliding me off the operating table. After about 6 months all pain is gone, I don't remember now. I'm 13 months post-op and feeling great. Hang in there.

Cathleen Weed At least it's your right arm...less scary. It sounds like a pinched nerve in your neck. Especially because you say it's worse at night. Try using a cervical neck pillow for sleeping to restore the curve in your neck and open those discs. I personally would see a Chiropractor. Made all the difference for me. :)

The headaches finally stopped. They lasted about 2 weeks off and on. So grateful those appear to be over. They were AWFUL.
Ive been in cardiac rehab now going on my 3rd week. It has been ok. Right now they have me doing the treadmill, stationary bike and another stationary called Nustep where you push back and forth with your feet instead of circular like the bike. They arent going to start anything upper body for 2 more weeks. They want to make sure the bone is healed enough. All the while hooked up to a portable heart monitor.
I was having pretty intense palpitations when I came home from the hospital. They lasted off and on for a few weeks. Part of the healing process is what they said. Always with the disclaimer if they were constant I needed to go to the ER. They have tapered off.
I have pains here and there and still hurt especially when I get up in the mornings. Still sleep holding a pillow to help.
I am at the point of weekly blood checks now. When I 1st came home it was every other day. So we are making great progress with keeping my levels where they want them. I was a little under last week 1.9 (they want me 2-2.5) but we are holding the warfarin dosage where it is and I go back Tues to have it checked.

Thanks guys for the responses. Having others to ask that know what it's like and what you are going through is such a huge help. My doc thinks the headaches are tension related from the surgery, with all the trauma our bodies go through with this surgery. I was prescribed Tylenol with codeine and muscle relaxers to help. Surgeon also wants me to do cardiac rehab this time. I didn't have to do that after my 1st surgery so not sure what to expect. Just waiting on ins to approve it so I can start. Hoping it will help with headache relief as well.
Anyone else had to do rehab? What kind of stuff did u have to do?

Jan McClain People rave about cardiac rehab on this site. I just started last week. Basically your heart is monitored while you do aerobic exercise. It's fun, it's motivating and positive, and you meet other people in the same boat, so to speak. There is also an educational component, classes. One of the classes I am looking forward to attend is "Laughter Yoga" where you just laugh for an hour--MY kind of exercise!

Kelly Weisgarber Hi Catrina. I have been going to cardiac rehab for about 6 weeks, (I was at almost 3 months post op, so a little late getting started). I like it. I wear a monitor and staff keep an eye on BP and heart rate. We do different machines- it varies. Treadmill, stationary bike and elliptical, and something called Nustep that's like an elliptical but seated. After 3 months post op we added weights. I'm usually the only female there, and the youngest. I'm 48. Doc wants me to do 6-9 weeks. I enjoy it, I was worried about how much I can exert myself so this helps. There's also a weekly education class with heart related topics. Good luck!

Mary K One realization that I have had is that so many diagnoses are just a doctor's best guess. Many people have reported having headaches after OHS on this site, some start having migraines. Why?
Some people have lasting pain from having lain on the operating table in the same position for hours.
Stress might be a reason. Another reason might be all the medications and dyes that are used during hospitalization. I am sure that a trained medical professional could give other reasons.
The main thing is to monotor your condition, and be back in touch with a doctor's office if you are not getting relief. Sometimes the GP is a better choice because they know you better.

Emily Rowley The tension and headaches defiantly related to surgery. My headaches were coming from my neck so massages helped me a lot! I didn't do Cardiac Rehab the first time but now doing it and enjoying it now. We have information session each week on diet, exercise, medicines and we do exercise session twice a week. Start with group stretches then small intervals on the different machines like treadmill, bike, arm pedals, stairs and weights. each week they increase the intensity/duration of your exercises. A lot of people in mine are elderly and had heart attacks so the program is heavily based on heart foundation guidelines.

Surgery went really well. Seemed to go easier this time than last. I have been home 1 week now. I have been having trouble with getting headaches since I have been home. Has anyone else experienced that post op? With having a mechanical valve now and being on blood thinners my options for headache relief are alot more limited. I have always taken advil and now I cant. I am meeting with my primary care tomorrow about it. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue post op and what u were able to take to help.

Rita Savelis Yes. Headaches off and on most days since surgery (a year ago). I don't know if they are vascular or meds related. You should be able to take pain relief as long as it's not aspirin.
So my surgery was moved out 1 week due to a scheduling conflict for the surgeon.

Kate Watson Ugh that's one of my biggest fears cause I have several family members flying out to me for various phases of my recovery! I just went back and read your story- wow, you've been through so much. I am so glad you were able to get through your pregnancy safely. That must have been a very scary time. I had my son very young and they found my valve problems a few months after he was born. I was lucky to safely get through my pregnancy. I had my aortic valve replaced 10 1/2 years ago with a tissue valve at the age of 29. It's declining now, along with my mitral valve, so in April I am having both valves replaced with mechanical valves. I am also trying to adjust to the idea of being on coumadin for life. It's hard to wrap my head around. Definitely not what I expected to be doing in my 40th year! Wishing you well with your upcoming surgery.

Kate Watson Can I ask how long ago you got your first valve? Mine has lasted 10 1/2 years, but is now starting to decline. I hoped for longer but I guess I can't complain that I got this long out of it. I'm sorry you have to go through it again but I hope this will fix your heart for the long run.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this again, Catrina! I hope your surgery goes smoothly and your next valve replacement lasts much longer! I have a similar story to you from the perspective that I was diagnosed after the birth of my second child and my symptoms were monitored until I was told I needed surgery this fall at age 40. Had my AVR on 12/1 with a tissue valve. Was trying really hard to stay away from blood thinners due to some family issues with it so pushed hard for my tissue valve. My valve is already giving me trouble and I underwent a 4D CT scan on Friday and anxiously awaiting my follow up with my cardiologist. We are hoping it is a clot that can be resolved with blood thinners, but it could be that there is something else wrong with my valve as my echo results were showing issues. best wishes to you. Keep us posted.

Catrina Glover Laura, I will be praying for you. I've been trying to make sense of all this and understand why I didn't get more time with the pig valve. All we can do is keep going. The road directly in front of us is daunting but we WILL come out of this better and stronger. Hang in there my fellow heart sister. Please let us know how your follow up goes.

Cheryl Batzing Catrina, I live in Richardson and saw you were having Dr. Hebeler do your surgery. I consulted with him as well and he's a great surgeon! Will keep you in my thoughts & prayers on this "redo." Where will you have the surgery done? Downtown? Plano Heart Hospital?
