My 15 year old son Alex is having Ross on June 10th. He has bicuspid valve which we've known about all his life. We weren't expecting to need surgery this young. It was difficult to chose a surgery, especially because he'll be an adult in a few short years. He has pediatric surgeon Dr. Eric Mendeloff at Medical City in Dallas. Any words of wisdom? We just didn't think relegating him to a life with Coumadin was a good idea.

Kathleen F. From what I've read, the Ross is a great option for that age. At age 45, I had the Ross Procedure at Mount Sinai in NY with Dr. Paul Stelzer and couldn't be happier with my choice. It's been almost 5 months since my surgery, and I'm running 5 miles at a time, swimming and biking, and working as an attorney full-time again, with no restrictions. I just got back from a 3 mile-run with my local running club and a lot of people don't even know I took the winter off for heart surgery. I also did not want Coumadin, and I think we're lucky that the Ross is an option. I feel great and I hope your son will too.

Sorry to hear that your son is going through this much earlier than expected. Not fun. But, so you know, I had the Ross Procedure performed almost 10 years ago. I was 33 at the time. Thus far, both of my valves are doing great.
Fyi... A key consideration with the Ross Procedure is finding the right surgeon to perform it. It's a complicated procedure, so you want the make sure your son's surgeon has a great track record specific to the RP. I'm curious... How many RPs has Dr. Mendeloff performed? P.S. For those of you wanting to learn about the Ross Procedure, here's an educational video.
