I had an aortic valve replaced and a mitral valve repaired and the Maze procedure for afib. I was in the hospital for almost a month, Morton Plant Heart Hospital. The care was great. I had aortic stenosis and without the surgery a short life expectancy and I wasn't ready for the other side of the grass yet (I really do want to live to be 100). I had some complications after coming home which have slowed my recovery. Had severe dehydration twice and my electrolytes didn't want to cooperate. Now I am doing Cardiac Rehab and it is helping tremendously.
One of my biggest problems has been family who thought I should be back to normal in about 3 months. I think they now see it will be more like 6 months to a year but I will be back to my old active self.
My granddaughter in Cleveland is expecting my first great grandchild in late Jan. or early Feb. and I will be there to spoil it. I now live in Florida but as soon as an apartment is available I am moving to Cleveland to be with my daughter and her family. I can't wait.
Each day gets a little easier and this has been good for my OCD and patience, which I have never been big on. I have learned that just about anything can wait for tomorrow. I'd love to hear from others who are on this journey.

Rita Savelis I'm sorry that your family thinks you should be "back to normal" that quickly, whatever normal might mean. It sounds like you are doing great and 79 is 79. Your body has to react to the stress it went through, a long process. I do wish people would stop thinking that getting well is a race. Take care Barbara.

Jean Raber I agree you're doing well! I was with my mom for a couple of months when she had AVR at age 80. She had some bumps in the road including a pacemaker, and it does take longer for older patients to feel better. Also, sometimes families are given unrealistic expectations about how quickly you will recover. I am glad you are moving back to Cleveland and you have the baby to look forward to.
