I would like to bring to everyone's attention the very real possibility of internal bleeding when taking anti-coagulants like Xarelto for Afib. I suddenly developed pain and swelling in my left knee about 3 weeks ago which caused extreme pain and immobility. I was diagnosed at the ER with hemarthrosis, bleeding into a joint caused by Xarelto. I had been on Xarelto for one year prior. I imagine the other anti-coagulants could have a similar effect. No one had warned me about this possibility of internal bleeding on Xarelto, and the first orthopedist I saw didn't connect the dots. You might want to discuss this issue with your cardiologist. I am finally getting better and able to walk without a cane after 3 weeks.

I don't believe that internal bleeding resulting from anti-coagulants use has been discussed here from what I can remember. So, thanks for bringing this potential complication to light. Much appreciated!

Richard Munson It is for sure a side effect, i take eliquis. Hoping to get off it in time due to my maze procedure. On the flip side, contracting a stroke from a fib is also not a very pleasant thought. I took a baby aspirin for years and it also thins you blood which can cause premature bleeding.
