Richard Munson I read a couple of technical papers on sam after reading your post. My takeaway was that it usually occurs very soon after surgery but there are procedures available to remedy it. Cleland clinic is one of the best so no doubt you have explored them.

Susan Lynn Al - I was told I had Barlow's disease and thickened leaflets are pretty common. I had my repair done and I'm fine. You may want to ask your surgeon, but I'm guessing your leaflets were also thickened prior to surgery. It's possible that the last echo just got a better picture. Either way, I don't think there will be any action you need to take. Good luck.
al brach thanks susan for your comment, it makes me feel better.

Heart rate increase post-op
Hi adam!
know an increase in heart rate is normal post-op due to the ongoing healing and the heart working a little harder than normal, But, just wanted to compare notes with others for any comments.
My heart rate is running 90's - 100”s at least. Yesterday at local cardiologist it was 109. and my BP is low (94/80) He did do an EKG and I am in normal sinus rhythm and have been since surgery.
Wanted to know of similar experiences. Prior to surgery, my heart rate on beta blocker was always 60-70's with BP as 115/75. I'm sure it's the healing but just looking for input. I am now 32 days after mitral walve reaper I want to know if its normal and wen to expect it will get to normal range.
So, any comments on the heart rate and BP would be appreciated.
thanks, alex.

Susan Lynn My heart rate was up immediately after my mv repair. My cardiologist also told me my ejection fraction dropped below normal in my post op echocardiogram. He put me on low dose of metoprolol and lisinopril to facilitate 'heart remodeling '. Apparently, after years of regurgitation, my heart needs to acclimate to the increased blood flow. I've been on the meds since February and am hoping to find out this week if I can stop taking them. I had my repair done last December. My heart rate is down, my EF is up, my BP is good. I'm thinking you may improve over time like me.

Anna Jones Hi Al Brach, I have almost the same numbers as you at 7 weeks post op for mitral valve repair with full sternotomy. My cardiologist also did an EKG recently and said I was in normal sinus rhythm with tachycardia. He didn't seem at all concerned. He told me that if my blood pressure drops into the 80's/50's that I should eat salty food to bring it back up. I'm thinking this is a common side effect. Sending best wishes.

Kelly Stoll Mine races as well. They attributed it to anxiety and a "young" heart surgery... it also could be a rebound effect from coming off of the BP medications. As my doctors all seem unconcerned at this time, and I take an extra anxiety pill a day which has lowered it, they said they expect it will bounce back around six months or so to its lower rate.

Rita Savelis I've always had low blood pressure and that never changed, but my heart rate is much much faster than before my OHS. It is normal for everyone for weeks/months after surgery (this is why one often gets prescribed betablockers). This is an aftereffect of the trauma your heart went through and it is trying to find its way now. Most patients' heart rates will slow down eventually. But it can take time. If doctors aren't worried, that means it's okay for you.

Kim Lonergan I had low BP and heart rate prior to mitral valve repair surgery! After surgery still low BP (89/70) but much higher heart rate 110-125. My cardiologist has increased my dosage of metoprolol but says it is something many people deal with after heart surgery. I am 5 weeks post op so I hope it does slow down over time, Hang in there, I think a lot of us are having the same issue along with you!

Diane T I'm 6 months post-mitral valve repair and my heart rate is just now finally getting back to pre-surgery levels. I was in the 90's and low 100's for weeks after surgery. Things began improving (slooowly) at 4 weeks. Once I began cardiac rehab at 6 weeks things began to improve more quickly. The rehab really makes a difference.
