About Me (In My Own Words)
On July 31, 2014 I underwent open heart surgery at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. My aortic valve was replaced with a 29 mm Freestyle Aortic Root Heart Valve by Dr. George Deeb. Everything went fine and I was soon running again. In March of this year a deterioration of my running distance and speed led to the diagnosis of aortic heart valve deterioration. Drs. Deeb and Fukuhara agreed that a TAVR was not possible due to the size of my 29 mm valve. Dr. Fukuhara will replace the porcine valve with a stinted 27 mm bovine valve while not having to replace the porcine root again. Hopefully this valve will last 20 years and I can get a TAVR when I’m 91. I had a wonderful experience for my last surgery and I am ready for a repeat on March 23 at the U of M Cardiovascular Center.
