About Me (In My Own Words)
I had a history of a heart murmur dating back to the early 2000 not much concern about it from the doctors at the time or from me, had a stress test done in 2003 and 2004 everything seem to be okay I don't remember them saying anything about mitral valve prolapse at that time, I believe one of the nurses even said I had the heart of a bull after my first stress test. Fast forward to 2016 I came down with endocarditis. Family doctor had a very hard time and diagnosing it. a lot of my symptoms, which were textbook type symptoms he couldn't put two and two together. Finally got in to see in infectious disease specialist and he put me on antibiotics for six weeks was getting ready to pull the line and take me off and the nurse ask me if I had any issues and I told her I had similar symptoms pop up again in the last few days. A blood culture was ordered and it was discovered that the bacteria had grown resistant to the penicillin I was on at the time. The Specialist put me back on Vancomycin and I had to go through the six-week antibiotic treatment gain. Local cardiologist said I will have to have my valve repaired or replaced in the next 18 months, I think he said, after he put me back to work. In my opinion he was looking at more of waiting until it need replaced. I didn't like that option. I figured well why not repair it before it needs replaced that's when I took it upon myself to look into Cleveland Clinic cuz I've heard about them all my life living in northwest Ohio and now Southwest Ohio. Made an appointment to get a second opinion Through my cardiologist up at Cleveland Clinic dr. Griffin, he recommended I go with Dr Gillinoff, that was in October of 17. I could have chosen to get on the winter schedule which for me and the distance involved in my family and me in Cleveland was a no-go. this was completely my decision as this was elective surgery not mandatory. I chose April to have this done I went in on the 16th for pre-testing had surgery on the 18th was released six days later. Today is May 21st 2018 I am entering my 5th week of recovery at home. I started walking 7 days after I got out of the hospital I worked myself up to 4 miles a day. 2 miles in the morning 2 miles in the afternoon. I'm taking a break from walking because I think I overdid it four days ago so I've been taking it easy for the last 4 days no walking at all I'm going to start back tomorrow though. I have a appointment with dr. Griffin my cardiologist May 29th at the Cleveland Clinic and we'll talk this over with him and continue to recover
