I've been monitoring this most of my life (I'm 47) so it was not a surprise but still seems to have come much earlier than I hoped. I have a bicupid aortic valve and dialated ascending aorta. For decades it's been the same but this year the aorta went from just under 5cm to 5.6 cm. This is the reason why they recommend surgery...the bicuspid valve is doing "ok". Since the aorta needs repaired, the valve will be done too. Still trying to decide between tissue and mechanical valve.
