About Me (In My Own Words)
I had my aortic heart valve replaced in January 1988 at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore with a mechanical St. Jude Valve at age 25. I have been on Warfarin for over 35 years. Now 63, I lead a healthy, happy life with no issues. Over the years, I have competed in triathlons, century rides, and running races without problems. Recently, I completed a 5k race with my son, feeling great despite being a bit slower than in the past. Most of my exercise now comes from using the Peloton bike and treadmill, which fit conveniently into my busy schedule. I see my cardiologist annually, with an echocardiogram every two to three years.
In 2017, during a routine dental visit, my dentist noticed my blood pressure was unusually high. This led to the discovery of an aortic aneurysm. I was shocked and knew I would need major surgery. My wife and I trusted Johns Hopkins again, and in May 2017, I underwent surgery to replace the aneurysm with a Dacron graft. During the procedure, scar tissue around the St. Jude valve was removed to ensure proper function. The surgery was successful overall, with one complication: I developed atrial fibrillation three days later, but the nursing staff managed it quickly.
Every day is a blessing, and I am immensely thankful for my family’s support.
