About Me (In My Own Words)
I’m 56 years old, and was recently diagnosed with Severe Aortic Stenosis, Bicuspid Aortic Valve and an Aortic Aneurysm in my ascending Aorta. Last summer I started experiencing some shortness of breath and tightening in my chest upon exertion. My father died from a massive heart attack at the age of 55. Being the same age, I decided to be proactive and made my first appointment with a cardiologist for what I thought would be a routine check up. It was determined I was actually born with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve, resulting in the stenosis and aneurysm. Since my 20’s I’ve been told I have heart murmur but was never referred to a cardiologist for further evaluation. I’m so thankful I listened to that inner voice, and got checked out. I’m having surgery on February 23, 2023, to replace the valve and repair the aneurysm. After much consideration I have opted to go with a mechanical valve. Because the size of my aneurysm currently is on the smaller side, by going with the mechanical valve this time around, my surgeon is able to fix both issues, and feels confident this will be the only procedure I’ll need to have done. No future surgeries or procedures will be required. My son is 32 yrs. old, and had open-heart surgery when he was 8 months old. I helped him through his recovery, now he’ll be helping me through mine. I also recently became a first time grandma to a beautiful and amazing grandson.
