Hi Shelby, I was recently diagnosed with a leaking mitral valve. I am waiting on further tests to check how severe, and I was looking at support pages for further information and came across your page. I appreciate this will be a very difficult time for you and your family, however I wanted to send you my very best wishes for your surgery and for your family. I live in the UK and I wish you the very best with your surgery. It sounds like your primary carers and surgeons are fantastic and remember, you have absolutely got this!!! The very best.

Hi Shelby, I see that your in Tucson. So am I! If I can help in any way, let me know. I had mitral valve repair in October 2016. I went with Dr. Gillinov and robotic. It's a hard decision that we each have to make when faced with this surgery, but they all have very high rates of success when you've chosen a highly qualified surgeon. Iggy I Please make sure you ask your surgeons how many successful mitral valve repairs they performs per year, yes mitral valve repairs alone, not total number of OHS. Because that is crucial and quite determines the outcome and longevity of a repair. For example, Dr. Adams' MV clinic performs nearly 400 mitral surgeries per year. Good Luck! Hi Shelby! My name is Sophie Marsh and I had Barlow's as well. I had surgery with Dr. David Adams at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. He did an amazing job! I did a lot of research and after meeting with another surgeon, he told me my "Barlow" valve was difficult to repair. We spent most of the consultation talking about other options which did not sit well with me because repair is the best way to go, in my case. He referred me to Doctor Adams who was confident he could do my repair. I also ended up needing my tricuspid valve repaired. I cannot say enough about the expert care I received from Dr. Adams and his team. My surgery was in 2013 ( I was 42 then) and it was a new beginning for me. I have been part of a rowing club for many years since and I have more endurance then ever before. Please reach out with any questions. I am happy to help in anyway I can. Sophie Marsh You're welcome! I honestly have not been on this site in a very long time, and I randomly opened an email which asked for advice for someone with Barlow's and I see that Adam shared my video with you just previously. I also know two friends that have been to David Adams for their surgery. One was my FAA medical examiner who is a Physician and does my flight medical. He had gone before me and was very happy with his MV repair. The other was a friend of a friend who even let me go with her to her pre-consult. Also being in the medical field, she had lots of questions that I didn't have, and I was very impressed, plus it was great to see Dr. Adams again. Traveling to NYC for surgery was definitely out of my comfort zone, but we rented a small apartment for that week for my husband and mom and also my daughters came with another family member later in the week to visit. It worked out really well. I was discharged on day 5. LMK if you have any questions I can help you with.

Hi Shelby! I too had surgery with Dr. Adams 4 weeks ago today, on July 1! Other than the pain around the incision and related nerve sensitivity while it heals (gets a little better every day), I am doing well. Dr. Adams and team were fantastic. I had a Barlow-type deformity on my posterior mitral leaflet. It was almost 5cm tall!! I also had a septal myectomy. Happy to chat if you'd like.

Shelby Abramson Barry, would love to chat. Was your procedure minimally invasive? I requested consults at UCSF and Cleveland Clinic. I've seen Dr. Adams videos. Traveling to New York would be a least convenient option. I have two young children at home.
I'm reading my Echo and don't even see the values listed to determine severity. There's also a discrepancy; the MRI says the left ventricle is enlarged, but echo says normal.

The search for a surgeon that you trust is such an important part of this process especially given all the anxiety. I have MVP with Barlow's syndrome and just had a mitral valve repair on May 21, 2021. I saw a local cardio thoracic surgeon who felt given the complexity of my repair he would only have about a 50% chance of success. He gave me three names for surgeons who specialize in mitral valves. I did research and spoke to two of the surgeons. I chose Dr. David Adams at Mt Sinai even though it meant travelling and staying out of town. His team gave me such confidence that it helped to relieve some of my anxiety. The selection and waiting is by far the most stressful part of the journey. If you would like to talk or ask me any questions feel free to reach out. This site and the other heart warriors are very supportive and helpful.

I think that I forgot that your heart is still very much healing for at least three months no matter how you feel on the outside. I am very happy to be back on track and will continue to be thankful for my fixed heart. ❤️‍🩹
