Thinking of you and your dad, Rosemarie, this evening before the big day. May you find a peace in the midst of the storm. This procedure has become so routine, I have every confidence that his life (and yours) will be invigorated with the new valve.

Hi Rosemarie
I had my aortic valve replaced just a little over 2 years ago. It is a big deal but oddly enough so many of these are done that its almost routine. The success rate is astonishingly high. The first day or so is really difficult, but then the healing slowly starts and things get better. Four days in the hospital. I walked outside for a couple hundred yards the first day out of the hospital and things got easier from there with longer walks every day. Although things were painful for the first week or so, life returned to normal. The new valve is working well and I'm way more active than most men my age. So best wishes for a successful surgery tomorrow. Your dad will do fine.

I had my surgery at the same age a year ago. It was a breeze. I was home in 4 days and walked a mile in a week. Played golf in 3 months. The first week is the hardest. Put him in a recliner, not a bed. Give him the essentials so he doesn't have to reach or get up often. Be sure he walks and uses the breath gadget religiously. The pillow will be his best friend for a month or two. He'll hug it often believe me.
Don't worry!!

Save all that worry for something else. Yes, it is quite normal to have some fears but the surgery is so successful anymore. Your dad is going to feel like a new man. I had my aortic valve replaced 1 year and 3 months ago and I was 63 years old. I did fine like so many others and so will your dad. He is so blessed to have a concerned daughter...Take good care of him afterwards. That is the hard part. Recovery can be tiresome but each day gets better...

Rosemarie, your Dad will be fine. I am 62 and had my aortic valve replaced on October 11, 2016. It is scary, but many people on this website have been through valve replacement and have done really well. My surgery was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. This website is a great source of information. Welcome and Good Luck to your Dad.

I bet you are a nervous wreck! He is too! (He just won't show it, right?) Read through some of the journals and check out some patient photos of post-op. I think the worst part is the waiting, because of all the unknowns. Let us know what questions you have!
