Thanks for the response Michael. I hope to keep in touch with you as we had surgery just 1 day apart and same procedure, same valve. It helps me a lot seeing how everyone is progressing in their recovery-physically and mentally. I'm just taking it 1 day at a time. Trying to get stronger each day and started cardiac rehab a few days ago. Talk soon.

Hey Michael, you were spot-on. I have noticed that my eyesight changed. My long distance vision (nearsightedness) is not as good, and I now have floaters. Not sure why, but I will ask my cardiologist. Hope it is temporary, but thinking probably not. Has yours’ gotten better?

Richard Munson My eyes have no question become worse since my january mitral valve surgery. Comes and goes, makes me feel a bit lightheaded when it comes. Just happened on the treadmill for about 5 minutes. Blurry, glassy, fuzzy, not sure what to call it. Rarely occurs outside the house. One eye seems worse than the other. Now i know it is not just me.

Michael Morrison My reading has definitely gotten worse. Prior to surgery, I had a very small prescription, such that I couldn't buy them OTC bc they don't go down low enough. Now I'm wearing my wife's and hers are OTC. As for distance, I had 20/15 (eagle vision) and a very slight astigmatism prior to surgery, and it actually seemed to get better afterwards. However, my left eye seems to have the astigmatism back. I did do some research and saw that post surgery, vision problems are common, and usually go back, so I'll wait a few more weeks to see if everything evens out and then go to the eye doc.

I had my eyes checked yesterday, the doctor stated that my eyes are ok only need a better prescription from an Optometrist. Glaucoma is ok and no need for cataract surgery at this time since they are still very small. Floaters come once in a while but not often and I’m used to them.

Hi Michael. Regarding cardiac rehabilitation...after my surgery, they told me to call my insurance company to see what I'd have to pay but then, I had a series of complications in which I was hospitalized four additional times and spent a total of 24 days in the hospital and needed an additional surgery and another procedure. Turns out that I'm very symptomatic. At any rate, cardiac rehab was never mentioned and I was fine without it. My cardiologist wanted to keep my heart rate very low because when it would get real high, I'd go into afib or Aflutter. And I think in rehab, they push increasing the heart rate. So, bottom line, it's not for everyone but most who do go through it were glad they did. Since you had complications as well, that could be why it was not mentioned.

Yes, Michael, my vision was affected after mitral repair. I've had progressive lenses and vision was worsened at distance and near. I was looking forward to catching up on some reading during recuperation but the whole page was blurred. My doctor was not surprised and gave me an explanation (don't remember exactly but that the muscles that focus things were affected maybe?). I also get ocular migraines with the colorful shimmering rainbow aura described by some others, below.
