Good morning to you Lora Lee and your Family ! I was thinking of you when I woke up. Sort of a half awake cartoony thoughts of you surrounded sitting up in a sunny window area on a comfortable old chair with flowers all around you as you sit sipping a hot cup of tea, reading the newspaper, cat on your lap, dog at your feet, husband nearby cross legged asking you if there is anything he can get you and your daughter in the room now bringing a tray of meds and bottled water and a straw, birds chirping outside in the yard, blue skies with puffy white clouds. You have a great big smile on your face and you are thinking. Whoa, it is over and I am beginning to heal for real!
Hoping at least half of the above is going on right now, chuckle. I am going to get a cup of coffee and let the puppy out to find Kat, the cat. Have a good "Labor Day".

Hello Lora Lee!!!
Been thinking of you and praying for you our Aug 20th triplet! My first week I wasn't up to updating, and couldn't really think of what to say. Was concentrating on doing as I was asked to in the hospital, and then the getting home was quite fatiguing and took me a bit to get into a home routine. Sleep when you can, walk daily and Breath deeply and continue the incentive spirometry! Eat good things, your taste buds will wake up soon- for me it was cold fresh fruit, popsicles, toast and yogurt- and not all at once. Take good care and get well!!! Drop a line when you feel up to it!!

Hello Lora Lee- I was just getting ready to go back out in the 90 degree heat to let "Rylee" out for a little exercise in the shade, then back in to play with his toys in the house where it is cooler. I have been thinking of you for awhile now(since your surgery) and wondering how you are doing and if you are still in hospital or recovering at home? I am hoping all went well so thought I would let you know I am thinking of you and sending good healthy thoughts and prayers your way and hoping we hear an update when you are able. Take care Lady.

Lora Lee Peterson Thank you, Jean!!!!!!!!! Yes, it's just crazy how peaceful I am with all of this, after a few months of worry. I'm glad about that, because worrying is for the birds, and unfortunately, I still haven't learned how to quit worrying. It's really been helping that people have been asking me to do things with them this week, and calling me to wish me well. And, of course, a big part of my calm comes from this website and people just like you, Jean! I check this every day to see how my heart friends are doing. How did people manage before Adam gave birth to this site? I guess it's kind of like a cell phone - how did we manage without them? Anyway, thank you again! One week from today, and I should be well into this surgery!

Hello Lora Lee. Time is slowly advancing towards the 20th. and I was wondering how you are holding up as it seems the wait can get to you the closer you get to surgery or become less ready as you are probably at a point where you are ready to get this thing done! Hope things are going well for you and you are thinking healthy thoughts about all the changes that will come when your heart is healed and you can move on with the recovery! Nancy D. and I had the same date last year and are both doing well as we advance to the one year mark. I want you to know that you won't believe the changes that having this done and behind you will afford you especially when the Holiday's hit this year....Thanksgiving, Christmas were times I espescially felt my being

This is what I hope and pray for you this Aug. 20th. as you begin to look forward with new gratitude and strength! Take care and know you are thought of and prayed for!

Lora Lee Peterson Thank you so much Terrie, for your words of wisdom and compassion! I'm doing so much better than I was when I didn't know when I was going to have it done. When I start to think about what is going to play out on the 20th and for awhile after that, I shut my brain off, which isn't like me, but I think God is maybe helping me internalize all of this, and keep what I can control in front of me, and what I can't control over yonder somewhere else. I can see where Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to have an extra special meaning for me from now on. August 20th is my brother's birthday, and I think that is a good omen. I do feel blessed and unusually calm (today). This will sound very vain and insignificant, but I love fashion and all of that, so I'm preoccupying my mind with what I'm going to wear after and on the way home. It keeps my mind in a simpler place. I'm so glad to hear from you today! I'll look forward to keeping you posted on my progress. God bless you dear heart sister!

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Lora Lee. Want to mention that I believe "shutting off the brain" is a very healthy thing as you make your way thru the "waiting Maze" as overthinking makes the body tense up, heart nervous and when you let the mind wander after something else, gives it a chance to find some calm and not work so hard! By no way is it small or insignificant to think of what you will wear on the way home or after your surgery. It is part of the process of seeing yourself on the other side of this surgery and moving on with your life. If you feel like discussing this on a more private line feel free to email me at: tsyvertsen1@sbcglobal.net and I will be happy to enlighten your fashion sense as only those of us who have wandered the hospital halls with things hanging from hospital gowns can do! Later, have a good evening Lady.( By the way, as I am typing I am wearing Hot pink tank top, hot pink cotton just above the knees pajama shorts that has brightly colored tea pots, coffee pots, croissants, sugar bowls all over it and it was one of the favorite of 4 out fits I wore along with my hospital gown while In hospital and now am wearing due to the fact that I am on my final break of the day from painting our bedroom aqua blue and wanted something on that I am not afraid to get splattered on!!!!!! (On the lookout for the Fashion Police who would surely haul me away!!!

Nancy D Lora Lee, the brain shutting off is the way God lets you know he has this handled for you! The team you selected have a vested interest in doing their best so you can do your best once awake and alert! The details in between is for them to handle this for you! Very little you can control in this- after all I am not sure any of us signed up for surgery willingly, but when faced with the decision we knew we had to fight for our continued health. Once you wake up and take those first hesitant steps, you can once again pick up some control and work hard to regain your strength. Your work on the waiting side is about done- except of course to pack your suitcase, including the important leaving the hospital outfit; and I do suggest you complete the packing a couple days ahead so you aren't stressed and worried about all the details the morning you head on in. Terrie Syvertsen Lora Lee- sweet post up above! As for the outfit. I seriously promote for hospital wear(picture me coming through a doorway in high heels and a band playing as I enter.......any soft cotton(boxer short like without the needless cut in front!) and just to above or at the knees worn with the hospital gown is a very effective choice for after surgery as it assures no
hang up on the walks(while hooked up to lines and such) and amuses the nurses and staff as well as other patients leaning out of beds just to catch a glimpse at the nut parading down the hall. It is a help when going to brush your teeth, take a pee, shower to getting dressed made less complicated. When sitting up in a chair to eat or sitting to read or visiting
with people it makes it much more comfortable to have better posture and not show off anything unintended..........As I returned home as well I
began a series of walking the neighborhood with a matching scoop necked camisole like tank top which was large sized with the intent of letting the incision get some air(which helps to heal, honestly!) and didn't show completely but allowed me to take those first walks outside without getting hung up on buttons, etc. So of course I matched the colors with the bottoms and made sure they were long enough to cover well and not restrict the walks which after the hospital stay are GLORIOUSSSS! So if you go out to buy them make sure you buy a size larger so that the elastic waist will be comfy, easily washed and useful for the weeks to come. You will be surprised at how the neighbors appreciate your effort to get out and get back on top of LIFE you are and how much fun and entertaining you become! Good luck on this one! By the way Being that I am not a small woman I bought my "pajama pants" for the hospital and matching tops online at "Catherines". I hope that helps or at least gives you and idea of what is in hospital fashion and much more lively than the "hospital gown"
as you can just use their clean hospital gowns and the pants and get through the first days of surgery. You can wait to
match when you get home. Comfort is a
number one priority!

Lora Lee Peterson You answered all of the questions I was going to ask you, Terrie! I'll be checking out "Catherines" for sure! I'm not a very big person either (not the smallest, for sure), so that helps to know. Even if I'm feeling badly, I don't want to look like I am, so that's why I'm obsessing with my recovery wardrobe. One good thing - I don't have to worry about the neighbors. I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by oil wells (not my oil wells). Just me and the cows. I Guess there are the oilfield workers, but they are usually driving so fast, spinning up so much dust, they can't see me anyway. Plus, in ND, by the time I can start walking, I'll probably need a jacket. So, my fashion sense won't be noticed once I get home. Therefore, I'll have to make the most of it while I'm in the hospital. Thanks for the tips!!!!!!!

Terrie Syvertsen Lora Lee- You bring up a good point. If you will be having surgery in months where your house is cool buy the longer bottoms too so that you can keep warm as it is my experience that getting cold easily after surgery lasts awhile. Also, if you can't get outside make a point of charting an area
in your home that you can use as a walking path and clear any furniture that impedes your keeping on the move when you can't fight the weather. It is helpful to plan a walking area(avoid stair climbing)where just keeping on the move will aid you in your gaining your strength back and allow you a place to also make a "Pit" stop for resting which your body will also let you know when to take! Keep in mind that you want to be set up at home
for a safe retreat, free of obstacles you won't want to trip over when you
return and an area that you are finding the most comfort. By the way I believe that Catherine has smaller sizes too. Later! Back up the ladder.

Lora Lee Peterson I am going to be painting at my year anniversary, also. We're building a lake house, so I'll have lots of painting, and I'll be thrilled to be doing it! When I get home, I'll be living in my camper - it's only a year old, and it has recliners and the bathroom is only two steps up, as opposed to the only bathroom in our house, which is 17 steps up. Looks good on the fitbit, but not so good after OHS, I'm guessing. It's an old farmhouse, so as in most of those, they put the bathrooms where there was extra space, in this case on the 2nd floor.

Terrie Syvertsen Lora Lee- One more answer! Yes it is difficult but doable. It also depends on which kind(s)of incision you have at the time of surgery. If you have a smaller incision it might be easier. I can't speak for them but I had the full sternotomy and an additional group of stitches(metal) so I think mine might be judged as more difficult. If you look at my journal and at the photos there are two showing the top of my incision at a distance so you can see how high it went and the type of blouse I had on had a lightweight fabric and short sleeves and easy to gather over the head and stretch low enough to get the arms through. It is a good idea to find several blouses or shirts and practice lowering your head down and gathering them up to just get your head through then pulling the arms down one at a time to gently move your arm through one at a time letting it slide into place. It will give you an idea of where you are headed. To be honest with you Lora, even with the staples(and larger breasts) I was able to maneuver my tops over my head and get my arms into it by just following the instructions of no double arms in the air or quick moves raising or lowering the. Common sense will be your guide on this. And you can find something that might have a rounded neck and a few buttons in front? The most important thing is fine things stretchy and cotton if you can(in my opinion) You want to be comfortable and not changing into things too often at first to prevent your moving and stretching the incision area too much until you
find your comfort zone. I also found large cotton t-shirt type sleep shirts to be a smart thing to wear when I first got home as the cotton is gentle and moves with your body easily as do the cotton tank tops. You just want to avoid anything that pulls too snugly over the incision area.

Lora Lee Peterson Okay, that was a great answer! Thank you Terrie! I really did not know how high you could move your arms, etc. If I really look, I'm sure I can find a lot of this stuff at home. I'm not a shopaholic, but pretty darn close, so I'm sure I have shirts in all sizes and shapes and necklines that could work. It's a good thing this time that I haven't cleaned out my closet lately!

My gut feeling is this means we are destined to meet. Nancy and I came away sporting a Bovine valve! I was happy that I didn't "Moo" as my husband joked I would since most people knew I had intended on Mooing the surgeon not knowing it would be awhile before I woke up! Either valve is a great choice! ANY VALVE IS A GREAT CHOICE THAT KEEPS US GOING, EH? I AM GETTING EXCITED FOR YOU TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS SURGERY.

Lora Lee - I so appreciated your kind remark regarding the post about the anniversary of my parents. And as I look, I see one of my very close friends, definitely more a sister, Terrie Syvertsen, had welcomed you to the community. Indeed, this is very much a family, where we share, encourage, educate, and pray for one another, among other things.
Your initial journal post tells a tough story. Finding out that one needs this surgery is a massive piece of information to wrap one's head around. From my own experience, I can tell you that it can be scary, and I found that the more I learned about my conditions, researched for a heart valve surgeon who had extensive experience and expertise as well as documentible good outcomes, and asked and read about the experience of others who had been through what I was headed for, the more comfortable I became regarding what lay ahead.
Fear is usually about the unknown. I believe from lots of experience that Knowledge is Power. And Knowledge will drive out Fear. So I encourage you to spend some time going through the Learning Center here regarding having a bicuspid aortic valve (as I did), reading about your condition, watching some of the videos, and asking straight questions as you progress.
I am one who derived great benefit from this community and website and especially the Heart Family. If you go back and look, you will see that I had many questions, a large number of which came up during the learning process.
Please know that you will be in my prayers. Waiting is hard, but it can be easier if you educate yourself, for many of your concerns will be alleviated.
Feel free to send me a message on my guestbook if you have questions and need help. That will prompt me to get back on here and give you whatever help I can.
This site, begun thankfully by Adam, and so incredibly responsive because of the Heart Brothers and Sisters, has been a Godsend to me. For a period of time I was either learning on it or corresponding with others who had been through what lay ahead of me for hours every day. The posting of members are truly treasures, for they tell it like it is, and can turn one's mood from depressed to very positive and eventually confident.
May God bless you and your family as you move further along your own path on this Journey.

Lora Lee- I am with Tammy and the community in that you are a welcome addition and anything we can do to help you as you are waiting for your surgery....we will do!
There are many heart brothers and heart sisters who are I believe instrumental in making one's surgery wait far more easier than going it alone! It is a blessing to have people out here in our community(that you are now a part of) who will take the time to share themselves with the journey you are on? I do not know what I would have done and feel blessed to have stumbled upon this site while searching for answers too. There is no mystery here for me and no matter where your faith originates be it in God, Universe, plants and trees.......This is a place to share this story as you get ready to have your heart "mended". I hope that your wait is made easier by the support you receive and that you grow confident the closer you get to your "Big Day".
This is truly a Unique, personal time in your life that once having gone through your surgery will show you just how blessed, special and fortunate you are for having gone through it. Take care, Lady. (By the way....love your photo).

Lora Lee Peterson Tammy, you are the one that is so kind and supportive! I am so thankful for this website, because I may have driven myself crazy without it. Everyone's story is an inspiration, and I really do pray for everyone, as everyone else on here does too. The picture is my grandson who was 7 days old then, but is now 6 months old. Liam is such a gift!
Tammy Pilcher Thanks Lora Lee! Liam IS a precious gift!
