Kathy Sansone Hi Rob,
Yes I did go home that day, it was a Saturday and I had the surgery on Tuesday. It was a day earlier than they had told me previously. And the next appt on the 27th is for the surgeon to check me over. They will do labs, EKG, echo etc to make sure everything still looks good. Then I'll just be in the hands of my local cardiologist and shouldn't have to travel to Duke again

Kathy, Buzzard luck on the storm! I ended up cancelling my trip to Durham tomorrow to see Dr. Glower. My new cardiologist who interned under Glower is taking my staples out tomorrow here in Columbia. Just couldn't risk going to Duke. Hope you are well.

Kathy, I had MVP for years with mild regurgitation. In May and June if this year learned it worsened to severe withatrial enlargement. I was very symptomatic and just had surgery for mitral valve repair on August 20.
I wish you all the best and pray for a successful surgery and uncomplicated recovery. Take one day at a time. This is an invasive and complex surgery. Be gentle with yourself.
I was discharged this past Wednesday on day 11 following surgery. Everyone is unique and the process can be different than for others.
Take care of you.

You will do great! I, too, was rather asymptomatic for 30 years. I’m 4 months post OHS for mitral valve repair and I’m going to be honest...I don’t feel a whole lot different. I know, though, that what was happening inside was going to cause major problems if I didn’t get it done. I work in a high school and I wear my scar proudly!! When I saw my cardiologist about a month ago, I told him that open heart surgery really isn’t that big of a deal. He looked at me and said, “yea, it really is”. Lol. You’re young, you’re healthy, and you will truly be amazed at how quickly you start to bounce back. One suggestion is to have a shower chair for when you get home. I think you’ll find it very helpful.

I had mitral valve repair on 4/5/2017 - Know what? They were right - I feel fantastic. And you will too - and you did the right thing - researched and found the surgeon you are comfortable with. I'll think of you the day of your surgery - and pray all goes well like it did for me and so many thousands of others! The best to you - hang in there!

Good luck on your upcoming surgery, Kathy. Waiting is hard, but it is great to be on the other side! I had my surgery last September 19, 2017. I did not have many symptoms either, but the aortic opening had gotten small enough to be severe. My doctor drew a straight line and said many of us can go along for years coping just fine. Then he put an x on the line and dropped it straight down! But then you get to the point that you quickly decline. It helped me to think that I was getting it fixed before I went over the edge! Happy to say my heart feels wonderful today and so do I. Good thoughts and prayers for you!

Lynne Nind Hi Kathy, like Beth I am on the other side (27th October 2016) and must say the worst part is the waiting and anticipation. I was due to have both valves replaced but because of complications they only replaced the mitral. The aortic valve is still stable at Mod/severe but guess I will have to go thru it all again one day. I must admit that I'd rather not but now I know what to expect I am quite comfortable with it. Good luck and I will be thinking of you. 🌷🌺

Bill Gillam My visit to Duke was just awesome. I had no idea how large that place was until we drove in. At first a little intimidating. Then, after we parked we entered the second floor and saw an information desk in the middle of the lobby. I asked where Dr. Glowers office was. Amazingly, the attendant asked my name and says, yes he sees I have an appointment and points me in the right direction. From that point on I felt so relaxed. Everyone was so friendly. After meeting with Richard, his PA, we met with the Doctor. I knew then I had found my doc!
I'll tell you one more quick story on him. A friend of a friend of my wife's here in Columbia shared her experience with Glower. She had such bad regurgitation because one of her leaflets actually tore in half. Dr. Glower repaired it! Had to call for a special ring during the surgery which took a little time. After the operation Glower told her husband, "That was a doozy! " I talked to her on Saturday. Very comforting!
REPAIRING these mitral valves is such an art! We are in good hands.
Bill Gillam I enter Duke on the 20th. Surgery is the next day, the 21st.

It sounds as though your insurance company limits you to a network of providers, rather than allowing you to go anywhere you choose (if where you choose isn't in the network).
If that's the case and you're not comfortable with the provider you've been directed to, here's what I'd do. Get a list from your insurance company of every cardio provider the company does approve--then research every single one of them.
For starters, use this website's "Surgeon Finder" and read the reviews on each of the "approved" ones. Then go onto vitals.com, search for the approve surgeons and read the reviews there.
Top it all off with a visit to healthgrades.com (for providers' ratings by patients), and I think U.S. News & World Report also offers an online listing of the "top" cardiac surgeons.
By the ends of all this, you should have a pretty good idea about, and lots of confidence in, the surgeon you finally pick. Best of luck!

I live in Charlotte and I’m one month out from a successful repair for a mitral prolapse with severe regurgitation. Was diagnosed 12 years ago.
Glad to talk with you about how I navigated the whole thing. It feels overwhelming but there’s good info out there and great doctors. Research and preparation were the most helpful tools for me.
Let me know if you want to connect.

Kathy Sansone Hi Tammy! Just seeing this now, I'm so sorry! Thanks for reaching out. I live about 20 minutes outside Charlotte. What was it that made your valve situation complicated? My doctor has recommended Dr Barry Chan as my surgeon. I have heard great things about him but I'm unsure about the hospital he is affiliated with (Piedmont Medical Center). It's mainly just things I have heard so maybe I am being paranoid. I am meeting with him in 2 weeks to see what his approach will be.

Tammy Seigel Kathy, My valve was a Barlowe's valve where every part needed repair-both flaps and cords. It was "floppy" all over. Because of that my cardiologist recommended I go out of town to a surgeon who had experience with high volume repairs.
I actually spoke to Dr. Chan who had only recently arrived at Piedmont from Novant. He said he could do the procedure less invasively, as did Cleveland clinic (both without seeing me, just based on my films and reports.)
Dr. Chan was recommended by two people I respect and who think he is highly qualified.
My concerns were two fold:
1. After my research I just felt better about having the work done by hand through my sternum.
2. I learned that the surgeon is only one part of a successful surgery. The facility and a team with high volume experience improves outcomes. I was not confident that Dr. Chan's new team had that experience. I was also aware that Piedmont historically did not have a good reputation. I've heard it is changing, so that bias may be old news.
I suggest you become a good detective and ask lots of questions of people you trust in the area about Piedmont and also ask Dr. Chan to address the issues around his team and their experience. I know he's been working on developing a stronger team and since we spoke may have done so.
I found Adam's book really helpful and also Peggy Huddleston's: Prepare For Surgery, Heal Faster.
Hope this helps and doesn't make things more confusing. Trust your gut and make a decision where you have the utmost confidence, bottom line, that's the most important part.
Best of luck!
