Hey Julie- Cleveland clinic told me my tissue valve would las t 10-15 years. In fact, it lasted 12 years and failed. Kind of like shoes, they wear out and you have to get a new one ! But it beats having to spend Your life on-warfin!

Your story horrified me! I am so sorry you had this terrible experience. If there's one thing I've learned through all of this is that we have to research, advocate and think about ourselves first and foremost. Obviously you can't turn back time but going forward you must ask questions, understand what the heck is going on and have a strong partner with you to take notes and listen as well; whether it's a friend, parent, relative. I question the hospital's and doctor's integrity and mission with your case. I would have to try to get retribution. You will be fine with a mechanical. Things settle down with the meds as long as you're consistent with diet and even if your levels fall out of range, adjustments can be made. I still hear my valve working at times and sometimes it annoys me, like at night, but as my husband says you know it's working! Again, I'm so sorry about your experience. I was fortunate to have a relatively easy, if there is such a thing?!, replacement. I will be thinking of you and please reply if you'd like! Your son is a lucky boy to have you! You're extremely strong to have gone through all of that.

Julie Guillaumin Thanks so much Maureen. It was quite an ordeal. I thought later that maybe I shouldn't have told about all that, as it's kind of scary...but it was kind of therapeutic to do so. I did leave out some details, like how the hospital security guard let in homeless people at night, and gave them food and blankets. Then, around 5 am, they would all leave. That's nice, but not very sanitary. The things you see when you can't sleep. lol
(I still never talked about chest tubes) When the PT came by, she closed them in the recliner, and had me stand up. Not fun.
My choices were limited by my insurance. I went for the best surgeon. But I was in his care for 5 hours, then in that crazy place for 5 days. There was a state of the art, brand new facility an hour away from me, and I REALLY wanted to go there....but I felt I couldn't find out enough on the surgeon. And I felt like I was running out of time. I will def do more research in the future.
I'm hoping to get used to this ticking in time. And hoping the back pain gets better. I'm also hoping to sleep more than 3 hours in chunks sometime soon too. I know the meds are the culprit, but I guess I just have to wait til my body can adjust. Still so grateful to have that behind me.
I don't think there's such a thing as an easy heart surgery, but I sure am glad yours went smoothly.o
Hopefully we can now take a licking and keep on ticking. xo

Hi Julie! I'm hoping you're feeling ok and the surgery went well. I am five weeks out of mine today. Your first five days; my first five weeks. I can tell you this.......you'll be amazed how fast the time goes and the improvements come week over week. Its hard at times, but I found reading through various peoples journals and postings helped me to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Here's to a quick and healthy recovery! Bill

Julie Guillaumin Hi. I just posted a really long journal. I think I made the wrong choice, but nothing I can do now except invent a time machine. I'm going to do my best to live the best I can with meds. I am on 7 prescriptions and it's freaking me out. One of which, Lopressor is giving me horrible dizzy spells, palpitations, vision problems, and nausea. Thanks for the note, and I'm looking forward to those improvements. I'm so glad you are doing well.
