Hi Jeff,
Thinking of you! Hope surgery went well yesterday. The first two days are the hardest and then things get easier. I needed a full week to feel somewhat independent. (More “notmal”) Saying a prayer for you right after i post this.✔️

Jeff, I went with Dr Adams for mitral and tricuspid valve repairs. He and his team are outstanding. Couple of lessons learned: - i wld have eaten more iron-fueled foods before the surgery, because your hemoglobin tanks post-surgery; and it is a major reason for feeling so exhausted.
I would have asked for more help while in the bed to feel more comfortable, because laying solely on your back is uncomfortable. Adjustment of the pillows, etc wld have helped.
Lastly, hospital food and appetite will not be great, so have family bring in food like protein shakes, etc.

Jeff Frutkin Hi Deena! Thanks for much for the kind and helpful post. Glad to hear your procedure went well with Dr. Adams. I'm def nervous lol with surgery scheduled for Tuesday. Question for you: How did you feel coming out of the initial surgery? Best, Jeff
Deena Z Jeff, I was unbelievably exhausted, that was definitely the hardest part. The ICU nurse as soon as you wake up gets you out of bed. You will not be able to do such without help. It gets better each day.
The good news is the pain was pretty easy to control with meds, so don't worry about that. —- Just stay ahead of it. Don't hesitate to ask.

The other hard part was always laying on my back. It is hard to move your body around, because if u use your arms it do so it puts too much pressure on your sternum incision, so i kept using my legs to move around.
You will sleep a lot the first two days, which is a blessing. Get the walks in. I wasnt that eager to do so, then realized how much better i felt when i did so. So just do it.

Jeff Frutkin Hi Cleve, thanks for reaching out. I actually did a pivot today and decided to go with Dr. Adams from Mount Sinai for my mitral valve repair after meeting with him. My impression is that both Dr. Gillinov and Dr. Adams are two of the top mitral valve surgeons in the country based on their volume of repairs and outcomes. I chose Dr. Adams because he said he was 99% sure he could repair the valve.
