Jean, I feel your disappointment about the decision to keep you on the Warfrin. It is just one more thing to remember and to keep a check with the finger pricking. It sucks right? Hullo! I have been in AF for 4 freakin years! I plan to have a cardio version next week if my INR is at a therapeutic level. I will be so happy if they can zap me into Sinus. Thanks for the warning I may still be on the rat poison as well!

Jean Cook Gabrielle, thanks for your concern. I was only in A-Fib for about 6 mo prior to surgery. I had a stroke prior to my surgery. That is why I am still on the Coumidin. If you haven't had a stroke, perhaps you can get off the Coumidin. I am hoping a year after my surgery maybe I can get off of it.

I know how much you want to be off coumidin, which seems a logical wish to me. I understand the doctors being conservative about coming off the blood thinner; hopefully, with more tests they will feel confident enough to take you off the med.

Hello Jean. I have had aortic murmur for 25 years and been pre-medicated at the dentist for all of those years. No big deal. Keep up the good work. I will be getting my bicuspid aortic valve replaced next Wed. Gonna have some work to do to get back to work but it will work out well. Just part of the journey.

It is always rewarding to hear from you-you athlete you!! That puppy is giving you a run for your money. You are my role model. But I\'s have to retire to get in all that you are doing!! Maybe someday we can start our own walking club or at least an ABMC retirees\' walking club with no food attached!! Love Patty

I have had to have antibiotics for dental work since my first surgery in 1987. I know there was some recent research into the matter, but my cardiologist and surgeon both were very explicit that the findings that antibiotics weren\'t required did not apply in my circumstances. As with the others who have responded I have 4 amoxocylin 1 hour before dental work (used to be 6, so grateful they have lowered the dosage)
I also wanted to thank you. You are the only person I know who has had the same two procedures as I had in March. I have a mechanical mitral valve and craomaze and everything is going so much better than I could ever have anticipated. The reason I chose a mechanical valve was mainly due to age. I have had two open heart surgeries and two repairs, so this should last me the rest of my natural life.
Thank you for your journal posts.

hi Jean, Thank you so much for the encouragement. I know that verse really well. When my first husband of 30 yeas died, The Lord used that verse and some others to encouragement as I sold my house and moved to the big city for a new life. That was so scarey, but together We walked through it. Now I know He is walking through this with me. I did not know I had Mitral stenosis until April 30th. I have had echoes and CT\'s and stress tests for years but no one found it. Thankfully a new cardiologist did. He says its Rheumatic Heart disease.....no history of having it. Oh well. So I am now going down that road to surgery. I wish I could retire but not possible now. I have a an amazing team put together for my care. I trust them. But I was told a mechanical valve would be best because I am younger and may need replacement in about 10 years. He said if I was in my 70\'s I would probably get a tissue valve. I haven\'t thought it would be much of an issue to be on Coumadin daily......take lots of other meds anyways. We\'re you given a choice of valves?

I was given a choice of valves. I saw 2 different docs. Matter of fact, the first one told me mechanical and the one that did surgery suggested tissue valve saying that colonoscopies, dental work and other surgeries etc would require me to get off Coumidin , on lovenox, for a while and just would be a pain in the neck. He said the tissue valve would last 15 years. The advances in medicine by then would be great. He said it would not involve cracking the chest again but rather a new tissue valve inside the old one and go inthru the side. I believe him. It has been almost 4 mo and I feel great.
