Kimberly Eisenhut Jared, I also will be thinking of you tomorrow as I will be in hospital waiting for my surgery on Friday morning. Deena, what protein drinks do you recommend? There are just so many, I am never sure which ones are best.

Deena Z Kimberly, i asked my family to go to those shops where they “customize” your protein shakes. I could order my own flavor and had them double the protein. My taste was off after the surgery, so i actually just wanted to get it down. - straw essential:). I also drank some Ensure in step-down. But THEN… when i felt much better, my family got me rainbow sherbet and ice cream! - the best:)

Hi Jared -- Glad to hear that you are a candidate for the Ross Procedure! After having my bicuspid aortic valve replaced in 2013 with a prosthetic (bovine, Trifecta) valve, it became severely compromised 11 1/2 later, so I had it replaced June 2nd via the Ross Procedure. I seem to be doing well at 6-weeks post-op and was cleared to drive last week and go to cardiac rehab (monitored exercise.) Had a few bumps in the road following my surgery, but the actual procedure went really well with no complications. They ended up doing a vascular graft (Dacron) in the aortic position, but was told this is just to help everything function well in conjunction with my aortic valve replacement so that there are not issues down the road. Told to take low dose aspirin for the rest of my life, but hoping to be able to take something comparable that doesn't have as many side effects. If you are a a good candidate for the Ross Procedure and it will help you avoid another open heart surgery down the road, then I would seriously consider it! Sounds like you have a great surgeon and facility that specializes in the Ross! I would have done this for my first open heart surgery had I known, but the Ross was not done as often then. I understand that they have made some significant strides in the last 10 to 15 years -- making it a very good option and great for restoring a normal life expectancy! And Adam Pick is an inspiration as he has had a very good outcome with his!!! Many prayers for you as you make this decision!

Jared Stanley Hi Maureen, I'm glad that you are doing better post surgery! My surgery is going to entail a vascular graft for my aneurysm, as well as the Ross procedure. My surgeon didn't mention that I would have to take aspirin daily for life, but it seems like a good amount of people are taking it after discharge. Did your doctor place you on it due to the Dacron graft? I'm excited that the Ross is a good option for me.

Maureen Hoganson Good to hear Jared! It sounds like you have your plan and as long as your pulmonary valve is the right size for the aortic position, you can do the Ross! I understand that the aortic root is sometimes smaller than the pulmonary root, so they end up doing the graft for that reason as well. (Correct me if I am wrong!) Prayers that all goes well with your surgery and recovery! I just marked my 3-month anniversary today since my surgery June 2nd and am so thankful to be exercising and healing up. My AVA is so much better now and can tell such a difference! Regarding the low-dose aspirin, I think it is just part of the protocol, especially with the graft, but again, I would like to find something comparable (and found an aspirin that has more pure ingredients!) Continued prayers!

Jared Stanley Hi Grace! I'm glad to hear you are doing well! I had my consult with Dr. El-Hamamsy in July and felt really good about the experience. I'm scheduled for my Ross at the end of September. I feel relatively calm at the moment (which I wasn't expecting), but hearing your story and learning about the experiences from other OHS patients has helped me prepare for what's next. Thanks for your support! I'm sure I'll be reaching out with some questions .
