Hey Hal,
Yes, that first night is pretty bad, isn't it? Memory fades, though, thank goodness. You'll be home in no time, and everything will get better then, but for now it's best for you to be in the hospital. I have to say, I really sort of liked the food, but anytime someone else cooks for me it's a great meal!

Good to hear you are doing well. Eat good protein for healing. Take it slow. recovery is a bit of a roller coaster at first. You have good days and bad days, so expect some frustrations. You have to be patient to be a patient. Use the hell out of your spirometer. Walk, but don't push it. it's not a race. Sleep as best you can and as often as you can. That's when you really heal.

Just take it easy at home. Watch the stretching, that was just as painful as the surgery for me.

I had my aorta and aorta valve replaced on Dec 27th in Kansas City. Been back to work for 3 full weeks. Just got home from visiting our grand daughter in St. Louis this weekend. It was the first time I was able to pick her and play with her. Everytime I did I thanked God for having the surgery. And myself for the mental force to hang in there thru the surgery and recovery.

Hi hal,
Don't mean to put a dampner on it but if you tell them you have a sore throat they may be reluctant to operate. When my 2nd op was cancelled due to an emergency coming in, I commented that I had a sore throat and they told me to contact them if it developed as they will only operate at a minimum of 5 weeks following a cold or other virus. Fingers crossed and good luck

Everything was easier for me than I expected! The worst parts were just before and just after the surgery. My operation was Wednesday March 5, I came home Sunday March 9, and by Wednesday March 12 I could do almost everything by myself. I have a very VERY vague recollection of the vent tube, and a slight recollection of the 36 hours after surgery. I'll be following your story, please ask ANY questions, this is an awesome community for answers and support!
Hal McKinney Thanks for the info. I read your story and journal and decided to try it. I am glad that I did.

Best wishes Hal! I'm 1 week post op today. I used to be an avid runner before my cardiac arrest in Jan. and was walking at least 2 miles a day up until surgery, so it will be a big change for you post op, but as you've heard, the more activity you can do, the faster you'll recover and feel better. I've only been home 2 days, but walking really made me feel better, at the hospital and home.

Hal McKinney Thanks. That is good news about the walking and running. Before my chest tightness started, I walked at about 4.7 mph and jogged a little. Have had to slow down to about 2.3 mph and no jogging. Looking forward to getting started again.
