Esther Daniels I’m 2000, I was diagnosed with bicuspid aorta valve disease. I underwent valve replacement surgery in 2004 to replace by aorta valve with a St. Jude butterfly mechanical valve. They said it would last about 15 years. It’s now been 19 years. I’m not having any trouble with it: just have to take warfarin for the rest of my life. My question is, should I expect this valve to last a lifetime or be looking to have it replaced? What signs should I be looking for to determine if it needs to be replaced?

Hope it went super well, Gary. I had a mitral valve repair for regurgitation last year, January 24, 2022, also at the age of 70 at Baystate in Springfield MA. They also did an ablation while I was open and additionally put in a clip. I was in pretty good shape going in and that does make a difference. Recovery was definitely easier than I had imagined—quicker, too. I hope it will be the case for you, as well. Wishing you the very best.
Praying that all went well. My husband had open heart surgery for aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation last years. He's doing well and back to work.

My mitral valve was repaired on 1/24/23. I’m 5 weeks post op and walking 5 miles a day, driving and doing a good chunk of all the things I did before surgery already. Piece of cake my friend.
