Hi Erin how are you doing? I am still having pain under arm pits and into left breast. Did your pain get better? Also, when they cut out my valve they sent it to pathology and said it had giant cell arteritis never heard of that so they are testing me for that had to see rhematologist and opthalmalogist had another CT scan with contrast. Thinking of you and hoping you are doing good.

Erin Feaker I still have chest pain but I do feel it’s getting better. Coughing and laughing are painful still but tolerable and most of my pain is incision area (nerves?) and right side of my chest. We come up on June 6 to have some tests and meet with a cardiologist up there so I’ll know more then. My mother had and brother has giant cell arterits. They were both on meds for a time but other than that if didn’t cause problems for my mom and my brother seems fine. It can cause issues though so learn as much as you can!! Good to hear from you! 💜

Hi Erin ,
I slept on my back with pillows for support and just reminded myself to keep my chest in alignment - even though the wound had healed well . Now , over two years down the line , I either sleep on my back or my right side .
Don't compare yourself to other people , you are doing great .
We are heart warriors

Hi Erin ,
It is still early in your recovery after open heart surgery .
Are you wearing anything that might cause discomfort ? Are you sleeping in a position that keeps your chest in alignment , it might feel sore after cardiac rehab . I couldn't tolerate wearing a bra for six months post op .
The more you do , the more aches and pains you will notice . Keep pacing yourself .
Listen to your body . You are doing really well

i Thought perhaps it’s from me not wearing a bra as I can’t stand them but it doesn’t hurt to wear one. I have been sleeping on my left side. Im just concerned as I have been reading about how people are pain free in 8 weeks and can do so much more !! My drs say it’s early too but when does one need to be concerned?! So frustrating!

Ana Brusso Hello Erin, don’t compare yourself to others recovery on this site. It’s amazing how some of our heart warriors recover so quickly and run marathons etc., we are not all made the same. Is your doctor ok with you sleeping on your side? I got use to sleeping on my back and now occasionally sleep in my side. I will pray for your pain to go away. Hang in there there Erin 🙏❤️

Pamela Gregory Hi Erin, I think your recovery sounds pretty normal. For me, every time I did something new I would have discomfort (bordering Pain) for a couple days plus other pains for no reason (other than OHS!). At 6 months I still have that occasionally but it is getting better all the time. Also I could only sleep on my back till recently without pain on my ribs? I think most of us heart warriors are so happy to be alive that maybe we don't report on the site all the other fun stuff. Time really does heal all wounds and at 2 months I definitely had discomfort so do not worry.

I hope all goes well for you. It seems to be a fairly common surgery these days and it is a life saver.

I had the same: Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aortic root replacement in October 2014. Surgeon was Michael Tolan in Dublin Ireland. I have a Mechanical Valve in Dacron prosthetic graft root. The mechanical valve was chosen by Dr Tolan as I was into sport and it would last. I take Warfarin daily and it is no big deal. Recovery was good, I was determined to get fit again. I pushed myself every day to do more. I was training in December and I went Skiing with my Ski friends in January.
You will be fine.

Michael Tarasewich Erin and Rob , both of you will be alright.. And it might be just me but both of you, after approximately a year might feel younger. I can't explain it. I am 50 years old but after the recovery over each day to a year….. well you will be' younger' from the inside out.

Skin tone and heart pressure, it's somewhat like being 18 again! ( with common sense and learning )And I just wanted both of you to know this.

My experience gets is healing from the inside out. You will both be fine. IT'S WORTH IT! 🙂

My surgeon kind of took my choice of which valve away from me. I have the St Jude Stainless Steel. When I asked he said it was all about the lifespan of the valve, and my age. Apparently the SS has a 20 to 30 year lifespan, where the other choices are much shorter--- he asked me--you want to be in here again, at your age in another ten years or so? With the SS you do have to take a blood thinner the rest of your life, which many people object to---I don't find it to be that big of a deal.

Hi Erin, I had mitral valve repair surgery in December 2020. I, too, did not want to undergo an angiogram - another invasive procedure. I read that a CT scan can replace the angiogram if you are fairly sure that you don't have clogged arteries. I knew I didn't because I have been a vegetarian for over 50 years. The surgeon okayed the CT scan and I didn't need the angiogram. I also read that taking Vitamin C can prevent atrial fibrillation following surgery. That information came too late for me, but you could ask your surgeon about it. All the best, Anne

Rose Madura I had the same experience as Tom it wasn't bad at all and as far as I was concerned, I didn't care how many tests they needed to do prior to surgery because I didn't want them to have any surprises. It's not bad at all any many of them (if not all) today are done through the wrist. Mine wasn't.

My wife had an aortic tissue valve replacement in 2017 with at the time mild ascending aortic aneurysm. Two years later her aneurysm enlarged to the point they went in and replaced the ascending aorta leaving the tissue valve alone however 18 months later that valve failed and had to have a valve in valve procedure TAVR. In hindsight I would of insisted on a mechanical valve instead of tissue. Also wondered why they didn't replace both at the same time with the Bentall procedure.

I specifically asked as mine is a 4.8 aneurysm and he said yes they would do it all at the same time Mechanical means some lifestyle changes but I would rather do that I think then worry about the valve in valve replacement down the road. Hope all is well with your family
