Hi Donghua. Thank you for sharing your story. Very happy for you. I live in Atlanta , diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve and will probably need AVR in the not too distant future. I have researched surgeons and hospitals in Atlanta, and have read about Dr. Macheers. Would love some insight from you about your whole experience with him and also which hospital you had the surgery at and your feelings about the hospital. Thank you so much and I look forward to learning as much as I can.

Hi Donghua, I am happy that Lixian is doing so much better. Please do not see this occurrence as "bad luck". It sometimes happens that the heart or a valve wears out. An experience like this makes you a stronger person. Consider it "good luck" that medicine today has made such tremendous strides and the surgeons were able to repair his aortic valve. And yes, your perspective on things changes. You no longer sweat the small stuff. I wish Lixian continued healing and good luck to you in finding an internship. Never give up!

Welcome. Please tell your husband, the aortic valve sometimes just wears out. If that is the case, there isn't really much he could do to have changed it. Please tell him to not blame himself. I've known about mine my whole life and had surgery at 37. They were hoping it would last into my 60's but it got worse without any reason over the last 3 years. That's how it happens sometimes. Perhaps try to look to the future instead and focus on taking good care of his heart after his surgery. Until then, be kind to himself. Best wishes. -Kelly

Thomas Brusstar I agree that these valve conditions, especially in a person that young, are just a combination of genetics and bad luck. Of the 7 kids in my family, 2 have now needed mitral surgery, me one of them obviously. The others don’t appear to have the condition. So genetics and bad luck. But we are so lucky to have today’s modern surgical tools, and a health system that fosters centers of super-expert surgeons to address these diseases. Your husband will be fine, and you will spend a long life together once he gets this plumbing problem fixed.
