Hello Debbie- You had surgery the following month after mine and I wanted to let you know that yes I am also having a few issues still with one tender area of the full sternotomy that I had on Aug. 20th. of last year. There is a 3 inch area with Keloid scar that is tender and has a tendency to itch a bit and is very tender as it is at the
center portion of the breast area and any lifting work where I am lifting my arms or doing side to side motion seems to still aggravate it even though I have been good to
do stretching, etc. My doctors say that the chest wall area being a very active area is one of the last places to heal up and for some the process takes a while longer than others and to be patient!
Debbie cross Thank you Terri, hope you are doing well.

See you originally went to Dr. Gillinov and actually were in operating room before surgery was called off........very unusual to say the least. Didn't they know the results of all tests before putting you under??? Just curious.
Alan from Marietta, Ga here. I'm scheduled for isolated tricuspid valve repair (very rare from what I hear) with Dr. Gillinov on 12/11/14. Fortunately, I think it got caught (from my persistence I might add) before significant heart damage as I'm basically asymtomatic at this point. Looks like Cleveland has several tests lined up for me when I get up there. I've already had $40k worth of insurance costs on testing in Atlanta but assume they want to be extra sure before starting to cut. I'd go in tomorrow if they called and am very grateful to even have the chance to have this repaired as only 5-10 yrs ago, surgeons typically wouldn't do an isolated tricuspid repair unless the patient was symtomatic (ie: more heart damage). Think they've learned that's not the wise approach and are being more aggressive regarding tricuspid surgery.
Hope your recovery starts to smooth out and you're back to normal soon.
Best wishes.

Debbie cross Alan, I wish you all the best in Cleveland! I have been tested every year since 2006.Cleveland had all my test results and called and said I needed surgery within 6 months.I had 2 full days of testing at Cleveland Clinic before being told by Dr.Gillinov Tuesday afternoon that I needed mitral ,tricuspid valves repaired and a maze procedure. He told us now is the time.Wednesday morning when I woke up in recovery( still on vent),and found out he had changed his mind???? Can not express how upset we were! Nurse there told me in the 30 years she had been at Cleveland Clinic, she had never seen this happen! Anyway,2 cardioversion later, and after passing out in my kayak in the middle of the lake(in July),I called Northwestern Northwestern,Chicago. In less 24 hours Dr.Bonow had an echocardiogram and a TEE showing severe regurgitation and September 26 Dr.McCarthy repaired my valves and did the maze procedure.Of course I think Dr.Knight (electrophysithis),Dr.Bonow (cardiologist), and Dr.McCarthy(surgeon),are wonderful!

Debbie cross Hi Joseph, I have to admit I am feeling a little jealous. I did pretty well in the hospital. I thought once I got home I would just improve quickly.I have read many people say that it is a "roller coaster", but to be honest I am having more lows. Not really serious issues, but enough to keep me from improving. We had a local surgeon check my incision and he felt it would be fine and the hole should close on its own.Such a relief! My blood pressure is very low,so they are adjusting meds.I seriously have not had a meal since September 25.I get down an ice cream sandwich most days, sometimes an apple slice. Can't explain how awful food taste, how nauseous it makes me.The low grade fever, body aches keep me taking pain meds. Thank you for letting me vent! Lack of sleep has made me grumpy! I truly am thrilled you are improving.I know your family is relieved!

Eleanor R Hi, Debbie. What you are describing sounds like what I experienced as a reaction to some of the meds I was sent home from with the hospital with. I guess I just don't do well with medicine, having never taken much before. The Metoprolol lowered my heart rate and blood pressure a bit too much, so the surgeon's office cut the dose in half. I was also on Atenolol and the visiting nurse who came the first two weeks told me I had to take it, it helps the heart to regulate itself after surgery, but that it sometimes causes nausea. The pain meds also caused nausea, so I was weak and tired and didn't eat or even want to drink anything other than sips of ginger ale. When the meds were adjusted, things got much better. Maybe you can talk to your surgeon's office and see if they can recommend anything. I hope you feel better soon, so you can progress in your healing. Otherwise, it makes you feel "stuck", right? Best wishes to you. Eleanor

Hi Debbie
I was told drainage was normal or something to that effect, amount lessened at passing days but the medical staff did change the dressings and checked the site for infection (I guess) , however I had aortic valve replacement surgery and I just read your had repair, best to check with your surgeon and medical personnel.
I guess the home nurse and physical therapist are sent to those with Medicare and secondary excellent government medical insurance, nice if everyone had the same privilege.
Your procedure was two weeks ago and they should instruct you whether it needs to be reaccessed, my drainage was slightly over two weeks but it lessened gradually.
Hope and pray you will be fine and your medical advisors will respond which I'm certain they will address the problem
Best Wishes

Hi Debbie
I had drainage up to 2 weeks post op, I went to rehab hospital following 5 days in surgical hospital, so for 2 weeks following surgery did have drainage, since the on staff nurse and later at home nurse always checked the site.
Please do contact your surgeon and I'm sure he will guide you and your Cardiologist , do you have a nurse visiting you at home after surgery, usually for two weeks if all goes well a nurse and physical therapist are sent on separate days to monitor the patient
Best wishes and you have a beautiful family

I have no memory of the vent being in/coming out OR of the other 3 drain tubes.I hope this helps! You are going to be fine! I am praying for you.Debbie

Tom Elliott I'll second the massage suggestion - just a 5 minute back and shoulder worked miracles for me. I also got some relief from an old tai chi exercise I learned ages ago: stand up straight, imagine your head is being gently lifted, and focus on letting your shoulders drop. Don't force them down, just encourage them to relax downward.
And then of course there's Tylenol.

Eleanor R The standing up straight and holding head up is important, for we tend to curve in to protect our chest and that doesn't help our back and shoulders much. I think it was Meredith whose journal I read when I was just pre-surgery and she talked about "walking like a President'. Kind of hurt at first, but it did away with my back aches. When I got off pain meds (Tramadol) I was told to take Extra Strength Tylenol every 6 to 8 hours, but I agreed with the nurse to take just one every 4 hours, and that worked while I still had aches, probably about 2 or 3 weeks. Now I'm in cardiac rehab and it is a different kind of ache and pain, also relieved by Tylenol! Happy healing to you. Eleanor

I'm glad you are still hanging in there! You asked Ernie about a drop in blood pressure…….that happened to me on about day 5. I was being discharged from the hospital, and when I stood up to get in the wheel chair, I passed out. They kept me in the hospital for a few more days and lowered my metropolol and tried to get my meds balanced out. I didn't pass out anymore, but i did still get dizzy whenever I stood up. Part of that may have been due to anemia.
Stay strong. There are a lot of ups and downs those first couple weeks, but you will gradually get better.

Hi Debbie,
Glad you are still hanging in there! You asked Ernie about blood pressure dropping......that did happen to me on about day 5. I had Afib on day 4, so they upped my metropolol. I was getting ready to be discharged the next day, and when I stood up to get in the wheel chair, I passed out due to low blood pressure. They reduced my metropolol and it eventually came back up. I stayed in the hospital for a few more days until my meds got stabilized. Then I was fine. I did get dizzy for a few weeks if I stood up too fast. Part of that was due to anemia though.
Stay strong. There are lots of ups and downs those first couple weeks. It will get better every week.
Godspeed.
