How's it going now, Bill? Hope you're all fixed after your return trip to CC. We just never know quite what bumps in the road there'll be on this journey, and yet overall it's so good to be done with surgery. Take care.

Bill Hendrickson Good to hear from you. I feel very good heart wise but I had to put rehab on hold because of bilateral inguinal hernias that developed because I was straining with constipation. The smart thing to do is let the medication do it's job in good time. What a lesson to learn! I met with a surgeon at Penn State Med. Ctr who will operate at the end of May using robotics or min. Invasive laproscopic equip. My only problem for now is to lay down when I feel pain from the intestine pushing thru a 1/2 inch opening in the pelvic area. This could lead to intestinal strangulation which would be a very bad situation for a heart valve patient. Heart valve surgery can set us up for devious recovery road. I must say that it is hard to believe that I have two new valves implanted in my heart as I feel super good without any chest discomfort. Hope your recovery has progressed where life is back to normal. Let me know how things are going. BTW I was impressed that you could fly back home in such a short time after surgery. I was down and out for two weeks and my wife had to help me with every small thing. As an example taking a shower was exhausting .

Lenore Mitchell Hi Bill - recovery is certainly an up and down situation, I agree. Since this is prime gardening time, I overdid it last week, and paid the price - several days downtime. I also have long term chronic back issues, several icky fusions years ago. Each of us have different issues which rear up now and then. Sorry to hear you're facing inguinal surgery, but if they can keep it robotic or minimal, it should be ok for you. My cardiologist ok'd several trips to the Colorado high country (12,000 ft plus) this summer, so I'm happy - going there to botanize, so no heavy hiking. Doc did recommend getting a pulse ox however, which I'm looking into. Sometimes I feel great, other times i feel like I'm 110! (I turned 70 in March, so do qualify as a senior). Take care. Glad you have your wife to help. My husband died in 2011, but I have one local daughter, the other in Virginia, and they're both looking out for me - sometimes too much even.

Sorry to hear about your incision/stitch issue, Bill. Hope it's resolved quickly. My CC surgeon was Dr Marc Gillinov, and I liked him and was impressed by his superior reputation. He did always seem very busy, but the pre-op meeting with him was good, and then he came to check on me several times (not daily as a cardiologist and the excellent nurse practioner Diane Vargo handled daily in-hospital issues during my 7 day stay). Good luck to you!

Bill, wow - you've met some challenges, but glad to hear things are going well now.
As many folks have said, this road we're on often presents 'bumps' but all we can do is forge ahead. I went to CC as well, and I'm straight Medicare without a medigap and was surprised that my portion of the bill wasn't higher. I was expecting to owe them a lot more. Anyhow, glad you're on the road to recovery.

Bill and Edna- Great to get up this morning with a cup of coffee and read this update from you! It almost feels like you are waiting for the birth of a "baby" while waiting to hear from our heart brothers and sisters coming in and out of our/their
surgeries, isn't it? I guess in a sense it is a birth of sorts. New "baby valves" and a re-birth given that new start with a mended heart, yes!? Very happy that you sort of slalomed over the bumps and are headed uphill now with the help and encouragement of your lovely wife. Just a note about your appetite and food. I found early on that asking for salmon and veggies(if they have it and you like fish) was one of my favorite things on the menu and I found it easy on the stomach!
Your energy will return and the weakness will too given your energy to move forward and heal! Great news about the echo too. So very happy you are on the Recovery side. You both take care and worry about resting and getting those little walks in as you gain strength as you will have plenty of time for updating as you grow stronger. Be well.

Bill Hendrickson Terrie, thanks so much for your comments. My appetite is gone but my sister-enlaw had the same problem and said it will gradually return. This trip has its very emotional moments which come out of nowhere. I guess that will settle down when I return to see the family.
