I knew before hand that you would bounce back. it showed in your attitude and everything about you. Thank you for sharing your story.

There will be setbacks but with your level of determination I am sure you will accomplish each of them. Hey, Mini Z,
I have been touring the site a bit today because I have not posted lately and found that few have who had surgery around the time we did. I take that as a good sign, meaning that they are busy and getting on with their lives.
I want you to know how very precious you are to me and how greatly I appreciate you - pink robe, helicopter, track shoes and all! You are a delightful, joyful man and I am a better person for knowing you.
May God continue to richly bless you! I send you my love and plenty of hugs,

Been thinking of you and hoping all is well. Terrie tells me you are having some INR issues, and hope by now those are ironed out. I continue to think of you and keep you in my prayers. You were one of the greatest inspirations for me before I had my replacement, then I really grew to love you as you started to work through finding ways to sleep and missing your endorphins, then learning that you were at CC and making the same loop I would be later. And I loved that as I walked the loop you were there with me. So I am hoping all is well and miss hearing from you! Take good care of yourself! Many warm hugs, Ginger

Anthony Copeland-Parker Ginger, as you well know and probably more than others that nothing in life is easy. Using a home meter and not very good at it so I get bad readings every now and then. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Probably going to change meters since I changed insurance and the one that I am using is now out of network. Put me on a new Ace Inhibitor and only have to take it is my BP is either over 140 or 90. That is great motivation to eat right and exercise more. Off on a running cruise Friday so that should also help. All else is going well and great hearing from you.
Stay strong and inspire others.

That is fantastic. I remember the good old days when I could do a 4:09. Actually that was 4 years ago in Logan UT. I started running marathons when I was 45 and only planned on running one so you have a two year head start. Pretty sure I will get my medical back after 6 months after surgery but I am going to retire at the end of the year so might only be able to get my last flight in. Off to Des Moines for Marathon number 54 so thanks for the well wishes. I am sure I will need it since it looks like a hilly cource. It is also my understanding that the FAA only makes you wait 3 months if you get a valve repair instead of replacement like I did. I will follow along and wish you a speedy recovery. You will hear this all along the process but I will throw it out now. Being in great shape like you are will help a lot with recovery.

Hello Anthony! My name is Anthony Owens and I'm new to this community. I posted a question about what's life like with having a mechanical heart valve and being on blood thinner for the rest of your life and was told to reach out to you because you're the man. My surgery is this month. I'm 43 and leaning toward the mechanical valve because it last longer but you must take blood thinner. How has your life been with this adjustment taking the blood thinner? I saw the photo of you having a beer(cool pic!). Did that have any interactions with the blood thinner med?

Anthony Copeland-Parker Anthony
I must say that I went back and forth on the mechanical valve issue. I went into the surgery without ever taking any meds and the thought of taking a blood thinner was not very appealing to me. The fact that this same drug is used as rat poison did not help matters. I asked all of my three doctors their thoughts and most simply gave me the pros and cons of a mechanical versus bovine valve. I am sure you have done the research and my decision was particularly tough since my age of 59 put me on the cut off of going either way. They recommend mechanical valves for folks younger and bovine for folks order.
I looked at it this way. With my level of activity and how I look at life I think of myself as being younger than my chronological age so that had me leaning towards a mechanical valve. That coupled with not wanting to ever have surgery like this again led me down the path of mechanical. They say in 15 or so years when the bovine valve would need be replaced they will be able to do all these type of surgeries through the groin. I will be in my mid 70’s and that would still be major surgery. Also they say the mechanical valve that I have in 5 years or so they might have enough data to change the blood thinning requirements for the better.
Last but not least my surgeon is slightly older and a runner and when asked what he would do if it was him, with out hesitation, he said he would go with the mechanical valve. Mentally I think I would always have a fear that I would just wear out the bovine valve and that the mechanical will last way past me. I have not ill effects of the valve at all. In certain situations you can hear it click when closing but that is only when it is very quiet and you are either standing or sitting. I never hear it while sleeping and in most cases when I do hear it I do not pay it any attention.
The requirement of having your blood tested is the other consideration. For me I went in to my cardiologist once a week and within 15 minutes I was out the door after a simple finger prick. Once the number is stable you can go longer in between testing but studies have showed that people that test once a week do a much better of staying within the limits established by your doctor. I will be getting a home test monitor since I have been at this 3 months, which is a insurance requirement.
I have had no ill effects of Coumadin however I ended staying in the hospital a few extra days since it took awhile to get the INR number to where they wanted. I did see other folks leave a few days before me and was told that it all depends on the individual. Not a big deal, since I had to travel by plane back home after surgery it was good to have that extra time to recuperate in the hospital under the care of professionals.
I must admit that alcohol is an item listed on the prohibit list. The reason being is two fold. Folks that drink have a tendency to get themselves in situations where they might end up with an accident of some sort. The other is that will also thin your blood so drinking on top of taking a blood thinner is not a good idea. I am an occasional drinker and my numbers have been very staple and as a matter of fact once got into the desired range the dosage has been the same. I have two reminders set and I have not missed a day. I do eat a little something before taking it since I did notice it can upset your stomach on an empty stomach.
They will give a list of foods to avoid or eat in moderation and other over the counter meds to stay away from but if you eat a healthy diet it should not be a problem. For me if I had to do it all over again I would make the same decision every time. It remains to be seen if it was the right decision but in life there are many decisions that you make that are similar.
I do wear a Coumadin bracelet and have given up riding my bike from fear of bleeding out if I was to have an accident. I have been told by professionals that if you were in an accident and quickly under the care of a professional they have meds they can give you to thicken you blood back to normal range immediately.
I hope I answered all your questions and you can write me directly at Flyprkr@aol.com if you have any more questions.
Much surgery with your up coming and remember they do this everyday and no matter which way you go you will feel much better on the other side of surgery.

Well Hello there Mr. Anthony Copeland-Parker! Marathon Man. Man of Skill and Determination.....about to enter into the race you have been training for since you opened your eyes after surgery and said to yourself "I'm alive"! Since Ginger told you to put on those running shoes and get to walking the hallways in the Hospital!
Yes You have trained for this special day in Berlin. You have stayed in focus and made yourself ready for the 26.2 miles it will take to complete the race just 108 days after having open heart surgery. Walking, Running, Biking, making yourself stronger, fitter and ready for this challenge. You will do this and you will have a large smile on your face while completing this goal you have set for yourself.
I will ask you the following as one of your heart sisters who will be following you in spirit with every prayer that as you put one foot in front of the other you realize how special a day this is and how special a Man you are.
I ask that you don't doubt your abilities. You are a smart man. If you find along the way there is a need to stop, you will stop but I am thinking the same strength that got you through open heart surgery and back on your feet and training for this day will guide you to make the right decisions for Anthony. Remember Anthony, one foot in front of another. Take in the scenery and the beauty of the moments of your run.
Also know from the very start that with you.....You take: Terrie, Ginger, Vick D., Julia, M in Cornwall, Susan Smith, Eleanor, Bob O. Karen P. Lynn Q. Geri, Mia, Popeye, Olga, Kelly, Maron, Bill Bard, Meredith, Rebecca, Mary Anderson, Robin, and more of our village here. We will be the hearts you can wear on your sleeve as you make your way on this wonderful run of yours as we will be running with you in spirit and sending along our love and prayers for a safe and smooth race.
You are one of a kind and you can do this Anthony.
Remember Anthony...Luck has nothing to do with it but Love does and
know that as you run the Wings of your Mother will be at your back, guiding you on .
Best wishes for clear skies, gentle breezes and the strength and determination to get you to the finish. Love and prayers, Heart Sister Terrie

Now going for a much needed 40 hour cat nap so I won't be crabby when Gary gets home! Take care and see you at the starting line! Terrie

Good morning Anthony! I returned home from my walk in the park today very happy to see your note that you were "uplifted "by my post. I made a comment of you being a "Man of few words and wanted you to know I meant that as a joke as you have consistently been one of the people I love to hear from. You and others have made comments to me about my writing but you need to know that from the very beginning I found between you and Ginger(the people I first met on site)that it was your words, sense of humor when needed and information that I craved at a time I didn't even know what questions to ask, that got me from day to day towards my surgery. From the beginning, Anthony,(love using your name as I think you must smile and think of your Mom) but seriously, from the beginning you have shown me and others to look for the strength inside and not buckle under to the doubts and anxieties that try to force their way in. At a time when a person needs to focus more on letting things happen and not fearing what might be you were one of the primary people who helped me do just that and are still taking the time to do even today. I am happy you "Pop" up over and over again to help us all share in your energy towards life as it is contagious. For example dear Heart Brother....since I am wearing this monitor for another25 days to keep an eye on the heart rate I had begun my activities again filled with a wee bit of anticipatory anxiety at being alone on the walk. I walked alone that first day, Sat., Sun., Monday and today, same feelings at the start. Do you want to know how I kept going? Well, of course you do!! Ha. Ha. I turned my head up and down to cross to the park and headed out to the corner, stepped up on the sidewalk and when I felt a tug of anxiety start I looked down at the corner facing me(which seemed 10 miles away) and thought of you in Berlin all decked out in your running Gear and people all ready at the start......and put one foot in front of the other. One step at a time. One square at a time of the sidewalk. Envisioned the days when my friend Maggie and I would meet after work at Lake Merritt in Oakland, Ca. to jog or walk the lake which was 3.2 miles long. I remember watching the ground below us as we made our way along this beautiful lake to our right. It was some of the most beautiful time you could spend doing something healthy with a friend! Wind in our faces coming off of the lake, friendly faces coming and going at different speeds past us and all we did was move forward at a speed that made me feel weightless. The whole time there would be shouts and waves from people in the lake, on the little fairy boat ride and the noises from the ducks along the lakes bank. I can't imagine the feelings you experience being able to visit other lands/countries and the sites you take in as you are running not to mention being among crowds of people while you are running together to hit that finish line. I think of the heart community everyday as having being similar as we have a start that sharing our stories and journals together sets the pace and gives us the starting position. BUT It takes our community or village of people sharing their love, faith, fears, accomplishments, experiences to get us all across that Finish Line. You have been and continue to be "The Man" especially to Ginger and I who will always be a "Winner" in our eyes.
I am looking forward to hearing all about your run in Berlin and the many "runs" in other places when you decide to take that next chapter in your life called "retirement" which will only help you continue with your extraordinary Life.
And if your heart ever comes to the Bay Area of Calif. I want to know so that I can put the word out that Mr. Anthony will be in town so that we can gather together for a mighty heart hug! So, I have to go and get some yogurt and blueberries now!
You take care heart Brother & Bless Your Heart. Love, Terrie, Hunter and Kat!

After all you have been thru and you still found a way to say just what I needed to hear. I know the feeling of being out their and wondering how far you are away from home. Many a day I have worried while running that something would happen and would I make it back or would anybody be able to help if something was to happen. It got better over time bit then the concern shifted to did I bite off more than I can chew with the goal of Berlin so soon after my surgery. Each training run had both good and bad news. Yes I was able to get the mileage done bit felt worst than anticipated. Mostly just out of shape with out of breath or legs feeling like they weighted 100 pounds each. Some days were better than other bit always something that would make me wonder as the days ticked away with Bwrlin getting closer and closer.
The other problem is the web site. It must be me but I get so frustrated trying to figure it out. It must be a left brain right brain and no brain thing. So I found myself doing more reading than responding like before. Not all that sure of people are getting my responses or where they are going on the first place. Some cases a response is not always meant for the world.
I did have a set back bit it pales by comparison. The FAA just told me that for valve replacements they want 6 month before I can fly again. I was hoping for 3 months which was up last week. That puts me at the middle of December to apply and two months to review so I might have already had my last flight. After 37 years I really wanted it to end on my terms but as long as I can keep running I will be okay.
That brings me all the way around to the feeling you described. I had that two days ago on a slow 4 mile run. Took it easy and it all seemed to come together. I was able to process the bad news from the FAA and day dream about running with 20 thousand of my closes friends while sight see one step at a time.
I will be sure to post the experience and thanks for helping me get to the starting line

Tony,
I am not sure you get a notice if I just reply to your message on my guestbook, so I am answering your question about swimming here.
I am not athletic like you. I swim as an exercise, but I don't compete. I can do crawl, breast, and back now. All are much slower than before surgery. For crawl, you are supposed to rotate your whole body, not just the upper body, so there shouldn't be upper body motion. Use your hip rotation to drive you. You do have to reach forward, so if you can't reach overhead, swim breast stroke. I can't do fly right now because of my shoulder. Actually, I think I am slow now for two reasons: my left shoulder impingement and being out of shape. If you want to swim crawl, look up some instruction videos on line. Try the "new" way, you will find gliding on your side brings much pleasure.
Good luck on the Berlin marathon. I hate to run but I admire people who can go miles and miles.

My surgeon putting me on Beta Blockers and Ace inhibitors to slow my Heart Rate back down and to lower my blood pressure.
