Angus, the best advise I received was from this web site, a Doctor who had this surgery. He said to turn inwards like when u have the flu or something like it & just concentrate on ur healing. Get plenty of rest, eat protein & walk alittle at a time. It will all come eventually.

Angus Butler Thanks Joann. Everything went well in surgery and was feeling great 24 hours after. I had a rough day today to be honest. Pain management didn’t go so well. I’m not sure if it was because I tried to do too much walking down the hall with a walker or all the breathing exercises. New day tomorrow!

I agree with Sue Maize since you’ve had two opinions that are similar. The added factor is that you are working with heavy equipment as a firefighter. At that point they definitely told me to lift only light things. I hope you’ll consider surgery sooner rather than later. 💕

Hi Angus-I just read your story and you requested feedback. First, I am glad you found this site! It is wonderful. We have some differences and some similarities in diagnosis. I am 71 so you are the age of my children. But my grandfather also had a bicuspid valve which skipped a generation. So when I was diagnosed 11 years ago I was shocked, to say the least.
It has been watched since then, only this year the aneurysm reaching 5.0. My cardiologist had said 5.5 also, so again I was shocked when Cleveland Clinic considers 5.0 the point where surgery is performed. One surgeon wanted to operate at 4.9, calling it urgent and my second opinion wanted to see me in 6 months. Anyway, you can see there are differences of opinion unless there are other driving factors. A second opinion is always an option.
I’m happy to answer any questions. My surgery is this month.

Angus Butler Thanks for your feedback Valerie! I really appreciate it. I have had a second opinion at a different hospital and both surgeons have said similar things with my diagnosis, procedure and timing. They both suggest to book surgery in the next couple months. I know they have to say that because of liability as there are risks of aortic dissection like my grandfather had at my age. Lots to think and pray about.
All the best with your surgery this month and I will be praying for peace during the wait and a speedy recovery!
