About Me (In My Own Words)
*His surgical date has not been decided at this time but the field wouldn't let me put "undecided"*
This is not MY story but my son's; Luke is a 16 year-old boy who was diagnosed with a BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE when he was two. He has had two major heart enlargements since he has been diagnosed; one when he was 5 (5mm) and the second one in June of this year at (6mm). This has brought him to now doing 6 month visits with his cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His need for replacement is getting closer. We are going to be scheduling an appointment for a surgical consult in April and we will find at that time if surgery will be happing this coming summer or if we can wait another 6 months-year. A lot of undecidedness at this point. We, or at least I, have SO many questions. Like what is better, tissue valve or mechanical valve? What have people had? If you had mechanical do you wish you would have went tissue or vise versa? Is it worth being on Coumadin? I am looking for a support group or some place I can get some advice. Is there anyone on here that can point me in the right direction. His doctor is AWESOME I can't say enough about how great she is! However, I am getting paranoid, worried and just am having so many questions I don't know what to do. I feel like this is NOT just mine or my husbands decision as Luke is 16; however; he is ONLY 16. Are we making the correct one if we choose one or the other? Maybe I shouldn't be so concerned until we speak to the surgeon but I just need some advice/help/suggestions on what to ask, look for, etc. ANY help would be appreciated. I know this may not be the place to ask but every time I google support group for aortic valve replacement I don't get what I think I'm looking for; any suggestions?
