About Me (In My Own Words)
Hi, I am 54 years old and have had a heart murmur for as long as I can remember. Since 2004, I have had the echocardiograms every 6-8 months to check the progression of the stenosis and regurgitation. It is finally time to replace the aortic valve and I am scheduled for surgery on June 15th. My dilemma is whether to choose a tissue valve or the mechanical valve. I would prefer the tissue valve because I don't like the idea of taking a blood thinner for the rest of my life and also because I am a light sleeper and nervous that the clicking noise of the mechanical valve will keep me awake. My surgeon was pretty adamant yesterday that because of my age (under 65 years old), I should get the mechanical valve. I would really appreciate any feedback from patients who have had to make this decision.
