About Me

I have been monitored yearly for my mitral valve regurgitation since I was 40 (discovered the defect in early 20's), and was told a year ago the regurg was moderate to severe, and I would most likely need a repair in the next year. I was stunned, as I never heard about needing surgery before. I got a second opinion, as I am asymptomatic (and was shocked by a not so adept at bedside-manners cardiologist.) My new cardiologist concurred, and started 6 mo. echos. This is genetic, my dad has the defect too. My dad was supposed to get repaired 5 yrs ago, but got endocarditis, and had to delay. He felt a lot better after IV antibiotics, and is postponing due to the more involved surgery (MV repair, aortic valve replacement, and 2 artery bypasses,) and the fact that he doesn't want to be on coumadin. His surgery is imminent, but I am the pioneer(never imagined this!) I am a 46 yr old mother of 2, 8 & 10 yrs old, and this is not too convenient. I am scared, but want to get better, so I am opting to be repaired in 3 weeks at the Mayo clinic, to have the help of my husband, family, and easier kid routine of summer. My regurg is getting slightly worse, and I am starting to feel more fatigue, and almost fainting. So, I guess its time to join the club! I am looking forward to being somewhat motherly when school starts for kids.(8wks postop)
