Susan Lynn Welcome, Vijay! You can't go wrong at Johns Hopkins. I'm sure you've been to the website, but it might not hurt if you make your initial call to Dr. Gammie. I don’t know if you had a preference for Bethesda v. Baltimore, but your first contact will point you in the right direction. You'll be impressed by everyone with whom you speak and meet. Johns Hopkins is in a class by itself. When I was doing my research, I was set on full robotic surgery. The surgeon from JH called me personally and spent about 15 minutes discussing options. I never forgot what he said, 'Sometimes we want to get in and get out (meaning that robotic is not always his preference even though he is well known for it). In a month, it won't matter how they accessed your heart. ' I never forgot those words and that's the day I shifted my way of thinking.
I ended up having minimally-invasive mitral valve surgery, but I was forever grateful to the surgeon who was blatantly honest with me about the not so publicized side of full robotic.

It’s hard to say exactly what drew James Gammie to cardiac surgery: the fascination of feeling better a day after his appendectomy at age 13, an influential high school biology teacher or training with the chief of cardiac surgery as a first-year medical student at the University of Massachusetts. Regardless, he was captivated.

vijay jagannathan thanks so much Susan and Clara for your newsy email. I did try dr Gammie's office and was told he is not an aortic value replacement and only mitral valve. it is a pity. i was recommended Dr Ahmed Kilac. we are checking this out. does anyone on this board know him or other good doctors at JHU. I was also recommended Dr. Jeff Cohen by my cardiologist from Medstar Georgetown Washington Medical center?
