Grace Mason I was able to fly 10 days post open heart surgery. I recommend requesting wheelchair assistance on the way home. While I was capable of walking, the wheelchair assistance allowed me to skip to the front of security lines and save my stamina for the trip.

Valerie Allen Yes, they will generally give you clearance to fly. In my case it was at my follow up a few days after discharge. So for me closer to 2 weeks. The closer you can sit to the front of the plane, first class if possible, in addition to what Grace mentioned, is very helpful.

Marcus Krauss The way my cardiologist put it was "if you feel up to it you can fly a few weeks after surgery, but you should weigh the risk of having some kind of complication that would put you in a different hospital full of doctors and nurses that have no idea who you are or what your case history is."
