Luke Rodriguez I had an aortic valve replaced along with a part of my aorta. Two days later I experienced heart flutter...my heart was beating at 170bpm. After 8 hrs in the ER and several meds, they gave me amiodarone which helped.
The doctor explained that my brain sends signals to the heart to beat but post surgery, the heart was confused because normally the current would go through the heart to the aorta, which was replaced with a prosthetic. The signal would have nowhere to go and this cause the flutter. My surgery was mid May 2022 and I was slowly weaning myself off several meds and the week of Thanksgiving I thought I could get away with no meds but symptoms appeared so I got back on a small dose of amiodarone and eventually was off by mid December.
If feels like it takes forever to heal and rewire the brain but eventually it does go away. I know its not AFIB but I think it is similar enough to share my experience.

Jill Porter If you read my story and my journal you can see all about my experience with Afib following my mitral valve repair. I was on metoprolol and amiodorone which eventually cleared it up. I stayed on the amiodorone for about 2 or 3 months. I believe it is not uncommon after heart surgery.

Ana Kelton-Brand I had a mitral valve repair, aortic valve replacement and replacement of my ascending aorta on December 29, 2023. I stayed in the hospital for 6 days. The day after I was discharged, I went into tacchycardic Afib. Went to the ER and stayed overnight, on IV Metoprolol. I was rehospitalized two more times that first week with Afib. The last two times, I was on IV Amiodarone for over 24 hours each time. I was discharged on oral Amiodarone. I started with 800mg/day, then 400mg/day and then down to 200mg/day. I was also put on Eliquis to prevent strokes from the Afib. I was prescribed a small dose of Metoprolol, but I am not always able to take it because of low blood pressure. I am being followed by an electrophysiologist and he inserted a loop recorder in my chest on Feb. 9 to monitor for asymptomatic Afib. I had my followup appointment today and I am thrilled to say that the loop recorder did not indicate any episodes of Afib since the time it was inserted. I finally was taken off the Amiodarone today, which made me nauseous and caused a mild elevation in liver enzymes. I will stay on the Eliquis for a total of at least 6 months, and the loop recorder will continue to monitor my heart for Afib and any other arrhythmias. I think the Afib experiences and hospitalizations were more traumatic than the actual surgery. Doctors assured me this would be temporary, but it created a lot of anxiety. As the heart heals, there's less Afib. It really does get better!!!

Michele Renee I had mitral valve repair in January and the day I was suppose to be discharged I went into AFIB. Really scared me and somehow I went back into normal sinus after a few hours. After another day in the hospital and being put on an iv of Amiodarone. The night I got home I went into AFIB again. I ended up going to the ER having a cardioversion. I was told that this is extremely common the first 6 weeks after surgery, especially for mitral valve. Still it was emotionally and physically draining. I am now 2 months post op, I am still on Amiodarone and xarelto until 3 months. Hang in there I think once the heart heals, the AFIB goes away. Still not fun to worry about!
