Hello Everyone,
My name is Paul, but I go by my handle, "psquare11" out here in the webisphere. I'm 78 and generally in good health, esp. now that I have taken care of a little matter of severe aortic stenosis.
I come to you with a question that may pique your interest:
After receiving a TAVR in April 2019, I had a very quick recovery and returned home two days after my procedure. I've had no glitches with the procedure itself, and have been feeling very well for the ensuing 4.5 months and counting. The only thing I've noticed is a disturbing increase in mental lapses (short term forgetfulness, absent mindedness, and decreased concentration/mental acuity). I believe this decline is attributable to a sudden increase in my statin prescription by the surgeons who performed my TAVR. When I say "sudden increase," I'm talking about quadrupling my previous daily dosage from 10mg to 40mg. I'm told the brain is largely composed of fat and that, simply put, statins remove fat from the blood stream. Couldn't there be a connection here? I'm sure I'm oversimplifying things, but I cannot otherwise explain this "fog" I'm in. I would welcome feedback from anyone else who has had a TAVR and been prescribed a sudden increase in daily statins (in my case, atorvastatin). Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with a statin increase? Has anyone reduced his/her statin dosage and noticed any improvement? I look forward to any responses, even if they are to tell me I'm off my nut. From what I've seen here, you are a very supportive group who really want to help. Thanks for that!

Marie Myers Why the large increase in dosage? Were you not responding to the lower dosage? It is my understanding that statins can cause some thinking difficulty, but I don’t know if that is proven or anecdotal. Also, did any other meds change? I have heard about brain fog from beta blockers also. I would schedule a visit with your cardiologist to discuss this issue. It could be due to several different causes, including long term damage from high cholesterol. An opinion from a neurologist may be warranted, also. Good luck in your journey!

Paul Plummer No reason was given at the time... seemed like it was precautionary more than anything else. My GP and I thought the lower dose was working just fine. No other meds other than daily aspirin. I thought my cholesterols were under control. No beta blockers are involved. The change in statin dosage caught me by surprise. I plan to cut it in half and will be seeing my doctor soon. I just wanted to get another perspective from someone who's been there. Thanks.
