Mitral valve repaired
I had a repaired mitral valve Oct 2020 and My most recent Echo was June 2021 which showed valve and heart function were working well and my recovery has been going well. I have started jogging/running and lifting weight in the gym but recently I started experiencing palpitation and short of breath that I would consider pre-surgery level. I would like to understand from the community if this is going to be part of my life going forward or there is reason to be worried again.
Thoma Lile I haven't yet had any surgery but I think you should contact your cardiologist as soon as possible.
Richard Munson I agree with thoma and is it possible you are over exerting yourself. Possibly the weights?
Marie Myers I agree with Thoma to call your cardiologist and get checked out. Better safe than sorry.

Olumide Adesunloye Thanks, I’ve contacted my cardiologist and he has arranged for me to have a 48hr tape monitoring and Echo next week and also CT scan. I had chest X-ray last week and found something not very clear or unsure of. I hope it all goes well for me next week.

Hi All,
I had my mitral valve repair surgery (minimally invasive) Oct 20th, 2020 and was discharged on 24th October but surprisingly I'm still experiencing shortness of breath 7 weeks post-surgery. My surgeon and cardiologist both said it is normal or expected as my heart is still getting used to the rigorous of the procedure. Recent ultrasound showed my heart is functioning well and the Mitral annuloplasty ring appears well-seated. So I'm a little confused.
Anyone experienced this symptoms post-surgery? Please share your thoughts or experience..

Rita Savelis Oh yes. My shortness of breath and exhaustion lasted for months. I certainly did not feel "better" after OHS for a long time. Recovery takes time, alas, and everyone's recovery is different. It's hard because we expect to feel great soon after. Sometimes doctors don't let one know beforehand that bodies and hearts take time to recover. Be easy on yourself. Your body has been through a lot. Take care.

Shannon Gray Yes, and boy is it aggravating. I am almost 5 years out from surgery and still have asthma like symptoms...i.e. hard to get a full breath/something stops it short. I by no means feel that will happen to you, but only relay that you are not alone and it can be a very normal effect following surgery. Take gentle care of yourself.

Marie Myers I had the feeling that my lungs were a little slow getting back to “normal”. I wouldn’t say I was short of breath, but like Shannon said, I felt like I couldn’t get a deep enough breath sometimes. My feelings slowly got better over 3-4 months.
